Today is .
On April 9, 1942, U.S forces fighting on the Bataan Peninsula surrendered to the Japanese. Following their surrender, thousands of American and Filipino soldiers were forced on the Bataan Death March, a brutal 65-mile march to a prison camp, where many died due to harsh conditions and mistreatment.
Today, we honor all those who sacrificed so much in service to this nation, including their own freedom. Also in our thoughts are their families, who sacrificed waiting for their return.

Our annual raffle has started again. We were at Port Wing yesterday and today. Tickets are available from post members and at community events and shows. Prizes include 2 Henry's in fourty four and twenty two, a Charles Daly over under four ten, Yeti cooler set, Ravin crossbow, 500 cash, or a guided fishing trip.

Hanson-Maki Post 506 of the American Legion is a service organization that is here to serve our community in any way that we are able. As veterans, we so often have people tell us, ”Thank you for your service”, and we appreciate hearing those thankful words. We also feel that a person doesn’t have to be a member, present or past, of the military to serve their community.
Every year our Post recognizes an individual or individuals that are willing to serve our community enthusiastically and freely. People that will step up when needed and lend a helping hand and not ask for anything in return. People that will give of their time and talents to serve their fellow man. So, every year we like to give recognition to some of these people. Although it is nothing more than a plaque and a heartfelt thank you, we feel that it is our way of saying “Thank you for your service.”
Our Outstanding Citizen Award for this year goes to a husband and wife team that has shown that they truly are a team that is willing to serve. They are always willing to volunteer their time to help some of the local service organizations including the Lions club and the VFW Auxiliary. They have helped out at many benefits for our community as well as people that have come on hard times. They always greet you with a smile and a handshake and I can personally tell you that they make you proud to call them friends.
The 2025 Hanson Maki American Legion Post Outstanding Citizen award goes to Ray and Christine Levine.

Reminder: American Legion Post 506 annual raffle celebration today from 2pm to 8 pm at The Other Place in Iron River, WI. Live Band starts at 4 pm, drawing is at 6 pm. Other raffles also taking place. See you there.
