Hello Dog Lovers,
With the desolation of the Iron County Dog Society, the board has unanimously voted to donate the entirety of raised funds for a dog park to the β€œNorthwoods Animal Shelter."

Thank you to all the dog lovers that have supported this mission for so many years and the endless fund raising by Judy's Artisan Bakery thru ACE Hardware. Your generosity of $1207.55 will greatly benefit the animals.

Our endeavors to bring a dog park to Iron County have ended. Thank you πŸ™

Let’s talk about dog parks.

There’s been a lot of conversation as we have been trying to settle on a location for the dog park here in Iron County.

Listed below are some of the arguments that have been presented against having a dog park and hopefully some insight as to why they may be mistaken.

1. Dogs already have lots of places to run.

1. FALSE Michigan has a leash law. This means that according to state law your dog is not allowed off k leash out in public…ever. Now, we live in a rural area and a small community but that is in fact a state law.

2. A dog park isn’t necessary because people have property to run their dogs.

1. Partially true: While It is true that some folks in the area do have property sufficient for their dogs to run, the majority of our population lives in the city and they do not have ready access to property to run their animals. Since many dogs have lived their lives on leashes or in homes they do not have the discipline to β€œstay” in an open area and need an enclosed fenced in area that they can run and play but not find themselves lost i.e. in the woods, lake areas neighborhoods etc.

3. There are lots of areas for dogs to be walked exercised etc.

1. Partially True: while dogs do need general exercise in the form of walks/runs, another very important aspect of animal health is their ability to interact with other dogs in a positive way. This should be introduced to every dog when they are puppies, but a dog park is a way for dogs to learn to be friendly with one another no matter who/what dogs come into their sphere of contact. This kind of interaction will help to create a healthier population of canines in our area.

4. The dog park will be smelly and full of excrement.

1. False: A dog park is not an eye sore simply because it is a dark park. Many dog owners are respectable and pick up after there own animals wherever they go. Others are kindly and help pick up even after those dog owners who aren’t respectable. The extended purpose of the Iron County Dog Society is to assist in the upkeep, maintenance and cleanliness of the dog park once built and established.

5. We shouldn’t be spending money on a dog park we should be spending on our playgrounds etc.

1. False: There are currently no city funds being used in the endeavors of this dog park. A group of individuals have created a 501c3 on their own dime, and have planned and pursued this endeavor on their own time. With a final approval of location, all building material and labor will be funded by the dog society.

6. We have meetings during the day so public opinions can’t be given.

1. False: While it is true that many city board meetings are held during the middle of the work day, that is under the jurisdiction of that board not the Dog Society, we are merely attending when we are told to. If you would like to see the meeting times changed, a request should be submitted to the chair of the board in question.

If there are any other concerns or questions please feel free to message our page and we will post answering them to the best of our ability at this time.

Hello Dog Lovers,
Here we go again with the City of Iron River. We will
be on the agenda for the Parks & Recreation meeting on Wednesday, May 11th @ 10 am.
The main dilemma we are having is that the city of Iron River has too many parks. We stay positive as we try to find a suitable parcel that will work both for the city, the residents and the dogs.

At the moment we are up to discuss our original location at Riverside Ave. This would be a new city park. Also under consideration is the Nelson Field location. This is an existing city park.
If you can attend the meeting with your support for a dog park in Iron River it would greatly be appreciated. Please share, comment kindly & positively. If you have hate to share please go elsewhere. Our dogs yearn for their spot in this community. πŸ’•Let’s unite to make this happen for our 4 πŸ•πŸ©legged friends!!!

Hello my dog lover friends,
It's been a while since an update so here we go. Our location for the purposed dog park on Riverside Ave is in the process of being relocated. I'll make this long story, short! With attending many meetings to discuss the park, it was concluded that the city did not need another park to maintain on its roster. The search was on again! What city park property could we use? It was quickly discovered that there is a lot at Bachmann Park, west of the baseball field, that is unused but presently maintained by the city. It appears to be a win-win perfect location. So, on on March 9th @ 10am the decision will be decided upon by the Parks & Recreation board. If you would like to show & voice your support please plan to attend. It would greatly be appreciated.

This has been my personal mission since 2018 to establish a dog park, in Iron River, for my doggy girl Gracie. She is adorable as ever now at 12 yrs old. She can some times be found using her wheelchair when her hip dysplasia gets the best of her back legs. She has seen many dog parks along the way in her life. Even spent some glorious time soaking in the natural hot springs of Eden, AZ. Oh, they were some of her best days. But she still yearns to get her groove on again with her fellow doggy friend at a local park where she lives. So far it hasn't happened in her lifetime but she waits. Soon she hopes to play, socialize and just be happy with her local & visiting doggy friends.

That all being said the Iron County Dog Society is looking for anyone interested in making this a reality. Once approved by the city it will be fund raising time, goal $20,000. Basically, the most important & expensive item is the chained link fence about $15,000. Once we get the funds for that it's a go. So, if you're interested in assisting in fund raising please Direct Message (DM) us here with your phone number, email and anything specific you might want to add.

We look forward with the help of the community to making this a reality, not only for our doggy girl Gracie but, for all our beloved doggy friends. Let's make this happen Iron River!
