LDA of South Carolina Information
In March of 1963, parents of children with learning disabilities representing local support groups from around the coun

try gathered in Chicago for a national conference. These concerned families organized into a national organization which was incorporated in 1964 as the Association for Children with Learning Disabilities (ACLD). From those beginnings, the Learning Disabilities Association of America has grown to serve tens of thousands of members with learning disabilities, their families, and the professionals who work with them. Today, LDA is the largest nonprofit volunteer organization advocating for individuals with learning disabilities and has over 200 state and local affiliates in 42 states and Puerto Rico. LDA’s international membership of over 15,000 includes members from 27 countries around the world. The membership, composed of individuals with learning disabilities, family members, and concerned professionals, advocates for the almost three million students of school age with learning disabilities and for adults affected with learning disabilities. The state and local affiliates, through their affiliation with the national LDA, work continuously for individuals with learning disabilities, their parents, and the professionals who serve them.

Get the facts about the causes of autism, learning, and attention disabilities in this radio interview and below https://www.radiomidcoastwcme.com/portfolio/tracy-gregoire-and-linda-birnbaum-on-autism-and-tylenol-on-the-wcme-midcoast-morning-buzz/

Do you have questions about the causes of autism, attention, and learning disabilities?

Fact: Learning, attention and developmental disabilities (including autism) are a result of complex interaction of factors - genetics, low birth weight, nutrition, toxic chemicals, substance use, and other environmental factors.

Fact: 1 in 6 children have one or more learning or developmental delays. The autism rate is 1 in 31.

Fact: The science is clear - toxic chemicals are increasing children’s risks for learning, attention & developmental disabilities, including autism.

Fact: Pregnant women who breathe polluted air are more likely to have children who develop autism. Babies who breathe polluted air are more likely to develop autism.

Fact: Pregnant women exposed to certain pesticides have children at greater risk of autism. These pesticides are widely used, including on fruits and vegetables, with little regulation.

Fact: Phthalates can contribute to attention and learning challenges and may be linked to autism. Eating and drinking food contaminated with phthalates is the main way people are exposed. Babies and toddlers have the highest levels of phthalates in their bodies.

We also know that black, brown, and low communities are exposed to higher levels of harmful chemicals.

But right now we are going in the WRONG direction. The Administration is trying to dismantle regulations that protect our health, firing and silencing scientists, and defunding critical research. Now Congress is trying to re-open and gut the Toxic Substances Control Act.

It’s time for policy makers to take meaningful action to protect children’s brain health and learning potential.

Congress and federal agencies can reduce known, scientifically supported, contributing causes of autism, ADHD, and learning disabilities by banning the use of chemicals that can harm children’s brain development, reducing air pollution, and keeping plastics away from food and drink.
