Rutherford County Attorney Announces He Is Pulling Practice from Local Courts, Citing Systemic Failures And Retaliation

🤯🤯“When courthouse employees can have s*x inside the courthouse during working hours, and the institution protects them, the problem is not courthouse space,” Morrow wrote. “The problem is courthouse culture.”🤯🤯

Saturday, May 30, 2026

RUTHERFORDTON, N.C. — A western North Carolina attorney who has practiced criminal defense and family law in Rutherford County for years announced this week that he is closing his Rutherford County office and stepping back from accepting new cases in both Rutherford and McDowell Counties — not because he is closing his practice, but because he says he no longer trusts the local court system.

Attorney Anthony R. Morrow, who operates the Law Office of Anthony R. Morrow out of Rutherfordton, made the announcement in a detailed public statement posted to social media, in which he outlined what he described as a pattern of institutional misconduct, judicial inefficiency, and retaliation against him for speaking out.

“I am not closing my law practice,” Morrow wrote. “I am removing my primary practice from a local court system that I no longer trust.”

The announcement comes months after Morrow publicly alleged that the legal action being taken against his law license was connected to his unsuccessful bid for a Rutherford County Commissioner seat. In a March 16, 2026 post made from his campaign page, Anthony R. Morrow For County Commissioner wrote: “I lost the race, so they are coming for my law license.”

In that same post, Morrow stated that Rutherford County judges had initiated a non-disciplinary case against him, claiming he is unable to practice law due to a disability — one he describes as 100 percent military service-connected. “Standing up for clients, for the community, and for Justice, there is no room for that in Rutherford County,” he wrote, “and you must be disabled if that is your idea of representing clients.”

That claim was corroborated by reporting from WCAB News, which reported in March 2026 that a case had been filed in Rutherford County Superior Court on March 16 seeking to place Morrow on disability inactive status — a move that would prevent him from practicing law. The filing was tied to an order signed by Senior Resident Superior Court Judge J. Thomas Davis. The case drew scrutiny from legal observers because court records listed no named plaintiff, with the filing formatted as “None, None vs. Anthony Ryan Morrow.” WCAB News reported the unusual structure raised procedural questions under North Carolina Rules of Civil Procedure.

In his most recent statement, Morrow cited several specific examples of what he described as courthouse failures, including allegations that courthouse employees engaged in s*xual conduct inside the building during working hours and that the institution protected those employees rather than addressing the conduct.

“When courthouse employees can have s*x inside the courthouse during working hours, and the institution protects them, the problem is not courthouse space,” Morrow wrote. “The problem is courthouse culture.”

He also raised concerns about judicial scheduling, alleging that judges operate on what amounts to a part-time courtroom schedule while individuals wait years for trial, and that family court cases involving child custody and support have suffered similar delays.

Morrow further alleged that in one case he handled, local law enforcement lost approximately 10 grams of methamphetamine that had been collected as evidence. In another, he said he defended a client facing eight counts related to the production of child po*******hy, and that the state failed to prove six of the eight charges.

“The failures are not isolated and the public has a right to expect better from the Rutherford County courthouse,” Morrow stated.

Morrow, a Navy veteran who describes his disability as 100 percent military service-connected, said he believes the legal proceedings against him are retaliatory rather than legitimate.

“This is not really about whether I have a disability that impacts my ability to practice law,” he wrote. “This is about whether the local judiciary and prosecution can stand losing any more to a person they cannot stand.”

Morrow stated that he has won the majority of his jury trials and that he intends to continue practicing law — just not in Rutherford or McDowell County courts.

“I will not continue placing my clients, my practice, or my license inside a local system that has shown it will use dishonest acts to avoid its own accountability,” he wrote.

Neither the Rutherford County courthouse nor the District Attorney’s office had issued a public response to Morrow’s statements as of the time of publication. CCNW will continue to monitor this developing story.
