You can find more info at www.wolfhollowipswich.org -Wolf Hollow was founded in 1988 by the late Paul C. Soffron, with the mission of preservation of the wolf in the wild through education and exposure.

-Visitors are welcome at Wolf Hollow, where they meet the resident wolves and learn the importance of the wolf in the wild as top predator. By observing how a wolf pack functions, visitors learn h

ow wolves are a benefit to the environment around them and ultimately to us as humans because of the many parallels to our own families. Wolves are still very much a threatened species and visitors will learn what can be done to help alleviate the threat.

-Wolf Hollow is fully licensed by the State of Massachusetts and the federal government as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. We support our work solely through our admission, gift shop sales, memberships and donations.

-Visitors have the opportunity to view the Wolf Hollow pack while attending an educational presentation or tour. The recommended age for this program is five years and up. While learning about how the wolf lives in a family group, its role in nature, its history with man, and the fight to preserve their species in the wild, visitors observe the wolves interacting with their pack-mates at close range.

We have a bit of news!

We recently decided to perform an DNA test on Gaia to see what breeds of dogs she is and what percentage wolf as well! We were told that she was 87% wolf when we rescued her, but it turns out that number is not accurate.

Before we share our findings - would anyone like to guess which dog breeds Gaia is? And what percentage wolf is she?

We will share the results tomorrow afternoon!

40 seconds of calm with Vilkas and Skadi!

These siblings are a bit more aloof than their brother Togo. They enjoy their personal space, but stick close enough to each other for comfort.

Size wise, Vilkas (left) is the largest wolf in the main enclosure, but Skadi 100% thinks that she’s the boss.

🔸Wolf Fact Wednesday! 🔸

Wolves are programmed to kill prey when they’re able. So do they take down prey just for fun? Science shows that wolves do not kill merely for sport. Wolves pursue prey for food. They eat what they kill and their diet is made up of primarily raw meat.

Surplus killing can happen in very certain circumstances and is rare. For example: in the middle of Winter, it’s more difficult for ungulates (deer, elk, caribou) to move in deep snow, which could cause wolves to achieve better hunting rates than normal. Wolves can successfully hunt multiple prey animals in this circumstance, and will gorge on as much food as possible and cache (bury) some for later.

But the reality is, the few stories of wolves’ surplus killing are often told and retold, and the normal hunting behavior of a wolf pack is a success rate of 10-20% of the time.

Doug Smith comments on surplus killing in the video below, stating that “They (wolves) risk injury or death trying to take on something bigger than them. So they prey on things in a risk-averse fashion. They only kill what they need to exist... We had a situation in March, 1996 where one pack of wolves killed 5 elk in one day, and they cycled back every day and ate everything on those 5 elk in over a 2 week period.”

Moral of the story? Surplus killing happens, but it is not the norm!

Do we brush our wolves?

The short answer is no. The long answer is that wolves are very good at helping themselves shed fur (and we’re here to help in other ways if needed).

You can catch our resident wolves brushing up along fence lines and using branches and trunks of trees to help shed some of their winter coat. Of course we also will help by plucking out bits of shedding fur if they sit by us and ask for scratches!

At this point in the season, the wolves are about two thirds of the way done with shedding, so they might look like they have a bit of a patchwork coat. In a few weeks, they will be fully slimmed down to their cool summer look!
