La Concordia, Jinotega, Nicaragua

The St Peter Claver Village of Hope project will underwrite the cost of constructing 20 double-unit houses that include sanitation and water. Through the Nicaragua Housing Match Program, which was developed to address the critical housing shortage in Nicaragua, each single-unit house that Food For The Poor constructs will result in the construction of a correspon

ding single unit, thus creating a double-unit home consisting of two bedrooms, a living room, a personal sanitation unit, and water component. About the problem:

La Concordia is a municipality of the department of Chinandega. Over 100 miles away from the country’s capital city, Managua,

> It has a population of about 7,832 inhabitants.
> The daily income is less than US$2.00 per day.
> Extended families of five and more are often found to squeeze into one room.
> There is no indoor plumbing or sewage system. Poor drainage quickly turns heavy rainfall into flooding, in an instant transforming the area into an at-risk zone. Residents’ houses will wash away and they are left to rebuild again.
