BORN AGAIN: 38 seconds of Rebirth

Caroline Ellsworth Morton (1878-1929) was a remarkable young woman. She was certainly more than an ancient grainy picture tucked away in an old scrapbook. She was born into the prominent Eugene and Harriet Ellsworth family in Iowa Falls at their mansion that once stood at the intersection of Oak Street and Rocksylvania Avenue about where the Red Rooster Restaurant stands today near the McDonald’s Drive Through. As a young girl she visited Europe with her parents. In those days of horses, trains, and steam powered ocean liners, that was a lengthy adventure for a young girl. As a beautiful young woman she attended Vassar Women’s College, returning to Iowa Falls to teach French at the newly established Ellsworth College. She married Doctor Lewis B. Morton and gave birth to her only child, Marcia, in 1905. Shortly after the death of her father, the Morton family moved to the young and growing city of Los Angeles, California around 1910. From the age of 40 onward, Caroline fought a battle with ovarian cancer and later on breast cancer. Unfortunately, in those days there was no radiology or chemotherapy and there were no antibiotics to assist with recovery from surgical procedures. Caroline Ellsworth Morton died at age 50 in Los Angeles, where she is interred at Forest Lawn with her husband, Dr. Lewis B. Morton.

For whatever fear of Artificial Intelligence we may have and regardless of what it holds for our future, it currently assists us in recovering the memory of these people from a century ago and honoring the lives they lived.

A Fox and a Deer have a standoff at the Mills Tower in Iowa Falls……….

This Fox approached this Deer very cautiously Tuesday night at the Mills Tower in Iowa Falls and we photographed him through the We**am there. The Deer was not intimidated at all by the Fox. The Fox tried sitting down, laying down, and crawling to wait out the Deer, but it was only an irritation to the Deer. I’m not sure what it was after. Perhaps it was hoping to follow the Deer to a fawn. The Fox gave up after a few minutes and the Deer chased the Fox off.

Guidelines for Preservation of History and Genealogy in Iowa Falls

Preservation of history is a continuous battle and you can never be satisfied that you’ve saved it for all time. Even if you’ve got something online, you can’t be certain that someone in the future won’t wipe it or make it difficult for others to find. If you are researching history just for your own curiosity, you can save it however it’s convenient for you. However, if you want to pass it on to someone else in the future, it’s best to use the method that they are likely to use: That means the latest technologies. Up until about 50 years ago that meant analog methods: records, tape, or film. These methods required actual physical contact and/or chemical processes to preserve and read the information. In other words, everything was “hardwired”. Methods of communication continue to change faster and faster. If you want to donate information to a Historical Society where it may be of value, you will find they will have the most interest in it when it’s already been recorded on or converted to the latest technology. To avoid time consuming conversions always use the most current technology to start with.

Iowa Falls Businesses in 1955

1955 was an optimistic time in Iowa Falls as the Nation was at peace, the economy was booming, and the town celebrated its Centennial. The town was platted in 1855 even though it didn’t incorporate until 1869. The number of people was growing quickly and Iowa Falls had a population 71 years ago in 1955 equal to or greater than today in 2026. Store fronts and shelf space were in great demand. There was a waiting list because nothing was vacant for very long and River Hills Mall was not to appear for another 20 years. There was a business on every first floor, every second floor, sometimes in the basement level, and often in the rear of buildings. Some businesses were even being operated out of private homes. It seemed like no type of business that larger cities had was too small or too unusual to exist successfully in Iowa Falls a lifetime ago in 1955. Note: There were many more small businesses, restaurants, and organizations, too many to fit into a single post. Only around 80+ are presented here, those with interesting, informative Centennial ads. It takes an extensive amount of time to collect.

The First Iowa Falls Football Team, 1895

As you can see, the very first Iowa Falls High School Football Team in 1895 was an integrated one. William Ricks was born in 1879 which would make him 16 years old in this photograph. His parents, T.C. and Nancy Ricks, had been born into slavery in Tuscumbia, Alabama prior to 1840. He went on to become a graduate of the University of Minnesota and eventually became an attorney in Cincinnati after working as a building contractor there. For reference, this picture was taken a full seven years BEFORE Jack Trice of Iowa State was born in 1902. Iowa Falls High School in 1895 was the old original high school at the NE corner of Iowa and Stevens Street that preceded the Central Building where the Fareway Store is located today. Since the first steel Oak Street Bridge wasn’t built until 1898 and the old athletic grounds at Highland weren’t laid out until 1905, it’s uncertain where this team played their games, how many games they played, or who the opponents were. The uniforms were crude since the sport of football was primitive in 1895. The clothing seemed to be a cross between baseball and rugby gear, offering little protection other than long sleeves to offer some warmth against the Autumn chill.

SHILOH ~ April 6,7,8, 1862 ~ “A Place of Peace”

It’s a major news event in our State when an Iowan makes the ultimate sacrifice in war. However, as tragic as it is it doesn’t compare to April 6th, 1862 when 11 citizens of Hardin County, Iowa were killed in Hardin County, Tennessee in a SINGLE DAY on the first day of the Battle of Shiloh during the Civil War. At the time, this was the largest battle fought on American Soil until later on during the Civil War. The carnage of the Civil War was very real. 76 citizens of Hardin County, Iowa died in the Civil War. In the Bible, Shiloh means “A Place of Peace”.

The History of the Electric Light and Hot Water Heating Plant in Iowa Falls

The history of lighting and heating in Iowa Falls is a fascinating tale filled with complexity and legal intrigue. The following story, as complete as it is, can still be considered just a brief outline that could be supplemented by going to the nearest law library and/or science laboratory. Although quite a few homes in Iowa Falls still have hot water heating today, those homes each need to have their own means of heating and circulating the water/steam. For around 60 years, though, the Iowa Falls downtown business district and a few select residential neighborhoods had district hot water heating from around 1905 through the 1960s. Hot water heating was going to be the next big thing in Iowa Falls, but the system was complex and never seemed to work equally well for everyone. For a few fortunate citizens district heating bridged the gap from fire places or dusty, inefficient coal burning appliances to the 90% efficiency gas fired forced air furnaces that were nearly universal in Iowa Falls by the mid 1980s. It became more dependable to pipe the natural gas to each home heating device rather than to send the heat itself. This also allowed for central air conditioning to be incorporated into the design of a HVAC unit. Today in 2026, many modern homes utilize other methods such as electric, solar panels, or geothermal heating. Blue Tooth thermostats now allow for remote operation of home heating and cooling systems.
