I haven’t had the opportunity to share these photos from the 2026 Youth Human Rights Awards until now, and what a celebration they represent!
We are deeply grateful to the Iowa City Human Rights Commission and all of its Commissioners for this incredible recognition and for creating such a meaningful opportunity to support, encourage, uplift, and celebrate our youth. Your commitment to empowering the next generation inspires us all.
A special thank you to Mayor Teague The City of Iowa City Government for joining us, sharing his thoughtful remarks, and helping honor the remarkable achievements and potential of our young people.

We also extend our heartfelt appreciation to Human Rights Coordinator Stefanie Bowers for her dedication, leadership, and tireless efforts in bringing this event together. Her work helped create an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.

We are immensely proud of our youth❤️Their passion, courage, and commitment to making a difference give us hope for the future. It is both an honor and a humbling privilege to celebrate alongside them and to cherish these memories for years to come.

Join the Coralville Police Department for a hands-on, interactive class designed just for high school students. Participants will learn essential lifesaving skills like CPR, how to use an AED, how to help someone who is choking, and basic first aid. This engaging training builds confidence and gives teens the tools they need to step in and help during an emergency at home, at school, or in the community. No prior experience needed!

🍎☀️ Coralville Summer Lunch is back for its FOURTH season!
A huge thank you to the amazing Coralville Community Food Pantry for organizing and hosting this wonderful program that helps ensure local families have access to nutritious meals throughout the summer.
Kids under 18 and their parents are welcome to participate and enjoy lunch on the days it is served. 🥪🍓

🌙✨ Celebrating Eid Al-Adha with Our Children ✨🌙
Yesterday, the Al-Iman Center Social Committee hosted Al-Iman Center Eid Al-Adha Children’s Event at Defy, bringing together 445+ attendees for an afternoon filled with laughter, excitement, and unforgettable memories.

One of the greatest gifts we can give our children is the space to simply be children, to play, laugh, connect, and create memories that will stay with them for years to come. Seeing their smiles reminded us how meaningful these moments are, and we are grateful to be a part of those cherished childhood memories.

A special thank you to Sister Saba for helping with setup and cake serving, and to Sisters Hajer and Eman for their assistance throughout the event. We also extend our sincere appreciation to the Iowa City Public Safety and their outstanding officers for their presence and for helping everyone feel safe.

Our heartfelt thanks also go to the Defy staff, whose kindness and attentiveness helped make the experience enjoyable for everyone. Your support and dedication did not go unnoticed. Last but not least, THANK you to all the families and community members who joined us and made this celebration so special. We treasure every smile, every laugh, and every memory created together.

To ensure that as many children as possible have the opportunity to participate, the first 150 children who arrive will be admitted for a two-hour play session. After their session ends, they will be asked to leave so that children who were unable to enter initially can enjoy their own two-hour play time. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the Iowa City Community School District for recognizing and highlighting our students' work and achievements, and for celebrating them with the same respect, pride, and appreciation afforded to all students. This recognition means a great deal, not only to the students themselves but also to the families, mentors, and community members who support them.
We are incredibly proud of each and every one of these young people, their maturity, strength, kindness, respect, determination, and dedication. They continue to demonstrate what leadership looks like and inspire us through their commitment to making our community safer, stronger, and happier for everyone.

To our youth:
You DO NOT owe anyone a presentation explaining why you chose yourself. Choosing who you are is a sacred act. You do not need to explain, justify, or defend your self-respect as if it requires permission.
Remember:
No fruit grows without roots.
Your identity, your values, your faith, your integrity, these are your roots.
When life shakes you, it is not the branches that save you; it is your grounding.
When your roots are deep, You do not fear the wind, You do not chase validation, and You do not break easily.
Keep standing tall in who you are and continue leading with character, compassion, and courage. We are proud of you all, and we are deeply grateful that our work helps bring such remarkable leaders into the world❤️❤️❤️

As proud members of the Mariam Girls’ Club, these students were recognized for their courage, leadership, and advocacy while supporting young Muslim students in our community. We are proud to celebrate their impact and dedication to making a difference!
