ZOOM simulcast meeting (for those not able to attend in-person) at IC Pizza Ranch (located at 171 Hwy 1 W) with Sam Helmick, ICPL Community & Access Services Coordinator and the outgoing president of American Library Association, who spoke about “Threats to Library Access”. Sam spoke about the rich history of libraries throughout Iowa and the many services they offer to their communities. The Iowa government (Governor, House & Senate) have been trying for years to dissemble them through restrictive legislation that economically will cripple them, legislation that has civil penalties (including fines and firing of librarians) and by book banning of “age inappropriate” books by age level. She went on to say that it was an Iowan who conceived of the Library Bills of Rights in 1938 that became the foundation for how libraries should be administered. It was later adopted in 1939 as the national standard. Now the government is saying that it is wrong. This effects public libraries, school libraries and interferes with any joint cooperation between these two entities even though there are 8 such joint agreements already in Iowa.
