The Iowa City/Cedar Rapids Kappa Kids Program at Kirkwood Elementary is a youth empowerment program sponsored by the Iowa City/Cedar Rapids (ICCR) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Incorporated. Kappa Kids is part of a comprehensive male youth leadership programming initiative in the Iowa City/Cedar Rapids corridor that spans from grades 4-12. The ICCR Alumni Guide Right Programs consis
t of the Kappa Leadership Development League (Kappa League), Junior Kappa League, and Kappa Kids. Kappa Kids’ purpose is to help underrepresented minority young men understand the importance of preparing themselves to be the future leaders of OUR community. Kappa Kids is developed for elementary young men from underrepresented/economically challenged backgrounds in grades 4-6 who attend school in the Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD). Kappa Kids seeks young men who would greatly benefit from a high powered “Leadership”, “Mentoring”, and “Self-readiness” program that is both challenging and extremely rewarding. The foundation of Kappa Kids is derived from the '5 Wells of Morehouse College' of being well read, well mannered, well spoken, well traveled and well dressed. What do Kappa Kids do? Kappa Kids is designed to help guide each young man to make “good choices” and develop valuable life skills in order to become constructive contributors to their communities. Kappa Kids meet twice each month with a selective group of positive minority male volunteer leaders who are college-aged and above, which serve as working examples for each young man to mirror. Kappa Kids engages in exercises to develop leadership skills while monitoring, encouraging, enhancing, and rewarding outstanding personal progress. This includes special guest speakers, performance incentives, and various cultural trips/activities.
