Hello friends! Yesterday was the new international graduate student orientation. Next week is the undergraduate international orientation. We expect to have 120 students sign up for the FIS program again this year. Which means we need your help. We will need at least 100 volunteers to match with them in friendship.

Would you be willing to befriend a student this year?

We will do matching as we did last year. We will ask you to pick up information on your new student at the Iowa City or Coralville library between August 27th - September 9th. This generally only takes between 5-15 minutes. We will offer 5 different time slots from which you can choose. This will allow friends greater involvement in the matching process and a chance to ask the FIS board members questions about the program.

Want ideas for something fun to do with your FIS friend, check out these community options:

Wilson's Apple Orchard
Apple Picking: Wilson’s Orchard is a treat for the young and old each fall. Catch Pumpkin Festival, October 14-15, or visit between 10am and 6pm any day of the week through October. Apple turnovers, apple donuts and apple slushies – these and other goodies are available in the store before and after you pick!

Pumpkin Patch
Pumpkin Patch: At Colony Pumpkin Patch in North Liberty, visitors can walk through a custom-designed corn maze and pick pumpkins for carving or decoration. (maze costs $7)

Mehregan Celebration - Persian Student Association (PSO)
Mehregan, known as the Persian Festival of Autumn, celebration will take place on Saturday, October 14, 2017, at Iowa Memorial Union (IMU), The Nebraska Room #335. PSO has arranged different programs such as Iranian music, Hafez recitation, karaoke and dance for this memorable night. Also, snacks and soft drinks will be served. Public is welcome.

Halloween Parade & Carnival
Put on your Halloween costumes and meet at Mercer Park Aquatic Center on Friday, Oct. 27 for the annual Halloween Parade and Carnival. The parade will kick off at 6:15 p.m. outside the Mercer Park Aquatic Center. The spooky Carnival will commence at 6:30 p.m. with carnival-style games, crafts, prizes, tricks, treats, special visitors, and other Halloween fun. There is no fee to participate in this fun, family-friendly event.
