We’re hosting a Community Conversation on Monday, November 2, and we’d love for you to join us!

At NAMI Johnson County, we’re working to better understand mental health systems in our community. We’re not just looking at how organizations work together or how policies shape services, but we want to know what these systems actually look like for the people navigating them. As we conduct a social network analysis (SNA), we want to make sure community perspectives are part of that understanding, too.

We’re also launching Creative Minds, Human Rights, a City of Iowa City grant project exploring mental health as a human right through creative expression, connection, healing, and self-care. Both projects have us thinking about how we understand mental health in our community and whose voices are part of those conversations.

This will be a chance to share your thoughts, talk about what matters to you, and help us better understand mental health in Johnson County. You don’t need to be an expert or have everything figured out. We’re here to listen and learn from one another.

When: Monday, November 2 | 6–7:30 p.m. (doors open at 5:45 p.m.)
Where: R Place Peer Recovery Center, 702 S. Gilbert St., Ste. 111, Iowa City

💙 September is Su***de Prevention Month — a time to raise awareness, recognize warning signs, and remind children, teens, families, and communities that help is available.

Su***de prevention starts with noticing, listening, and reaching out. Parents and caregivers can play an important role in recognizing changes in behavior and creating a safe, supportive space for young people to talk about what they’re experiencing.

If you’re concerned about a child or teen:
- Listen without judgment
- Ask directly about su***de or self-harm
- Stay with them and help keep them safe
- Connect them with professional support
- Call or text 988 for 24/7 crisis support in the U.S.

This Su***de Prevention Month, let’s start the conversation. One conversation can help someone feel less alone. 💙

This Thursday, join NAMI Ask the Expert.

As Dr. Christine Crawford moderates her first webinar in the series, she'll welcome nationally recognized crisis care expert Dr. Margie Balfour for a timely conversation marking four years since the launch of 988.

Dr. Balfour will begin with a presentation on how 988 has reshaped crisis care across the country. Then she'll join Dr. Crawford for a discussion about the progress that's been made, the challenges that remain and what comes next for crisis response in the United States. The webinar concludes with an extended Q&A featuring both pre-submitted and live audience questions.
