This anthology is a publication of the winning submissions from the Iowa Youth Writing Project’s: “Ghost’s on the Radio: A Short Story Contest.” You’ll hear the poems and stories of nine talented young writers from around the world who are between the ages of 8 and 17. 👻💚🎃

Not only are we creeping up to Halloween, but we're also getting closer to publishing Ghosts on the Radio: A Haunted Audio Anthology Vol. II! That means it's time to get to know the writers behind the spine-chilling stories! Not only are they great at weaving terrifying tales, but they've also got some pretty creative answers to our questions.

These talented writers will soon have their short stories, plays, and poems published in an audio anthology available on Apple Music and Spotify.

We don’t mean to scare you but there are only two more weeks until the Ghosts on the Radio deadline! For the second year in a row, the IYWP is celebrating all things spooky by looking for hair-raising, spine-chilling, supernatural stories all about ghosts, hauntings, and things that go bump in the night! Submit by October 14th, 2025 at 11:59 PM (CST). The Ghosts on the Radio Writing Contest is open to youth ages 7-18, in three categories: Elementary, Middle School, and High School. Winners will be announced the week of October 20th.

We will accept: Short stories, plays, or narrative poems.

Get to know the instructor: Tracy Meginnis!
Tracy Meginnis teaches for the Writing Certificate at the University of Iowa and has worked in literary and educational editing, project management, and multimedia content development. Tracy’s favorite topics include publishing and paper arts, folklore and fiction, Japanese language and media, pro wrestling, video games (naturally), and a cavalcade of incredible pets: two bunnies and three kitties. Tracy holds an MFA in Fiction from New Mexico State University.
