Our very own Young Fathers Network participant Davonte Foster is giving back to his community by meeting with young men of color at Northwest Junior High School! He recruits and promotes Dream City IA’s B.A.M (Brothers Achieving Manhood) program by talking to various students throughout the Iowa City Community School District!

B.A.M’s goal is to create a space for young men of color to grow and to be the best young man they can possibly be. This program create scholars, provide work opportunities to excelling students, as well as expose them to other intelligent and prospering black men in the community to show them what they can become!

This Thursday, United Action for Youth will be hosting its first pop-up event for young black men in junior high and high school! There will be panelist from Neighborhood Centers of Johnson County (NCJC) as well as black male fraternities at the University of Iowa. The event will start with the showing of a film called Black Boys, which will then be followed by a discussion of the film with the panelists. I encourage all to check out the event!

After the events that occurred yesterday at the Nation’s Capitol, we believe that tonight is a great time to unpack what happened. We want share a space and create a community where fathers can voice their opinions and be heard without judgement. We hope to see some new faces!

Last Thursday, we decided to try something new with our podcast project! Instead of doing an audio recording, we did a video recording. This is an inside look of what a typical meeting looks like for us. If you’re interested in having these kinds of conversations, then please join us! Last Thursday we recorded our first episode of our podcast series. This is a snippet from the first episode, which consisted of fathers telling their stories and how they got to where they are today! We will be recording episode 2 this Thursday at 5:30pm. We will be going live as well! Please tune in as we will be inviting participants to call in and share their stories and opinions. Young Fathers Network will be starting a podcast series that will discuss several controversial parenting topics! Such topics will include co-parenting, vaccinating your children, disciplining techniques, and more! Any and all fathers are welcome to join and participate in the discussions. These podcasts will take place over the course of several meetings, so feel free to join any time!
