The Road to Emmaus in a Scout Uniform

How does the USCCB’s new pastoral framework, "Listen, Teach, Send," come to life in your troop or pack? It’s simpler than you think—it’s the "Emmaus Model" of accompaniment!
• LISTEN: Just as Jesus walked with the disciples and heard their stories, Scouters are called to be mentors who truly listen to the "joys, stories, and concerns" of our youth. In Scouting, this happens at the campfire, during a hike, or in a Scoutmaster conference. We meet them where they are.
• TEACH: After listening, Jesus shared the light of truth. In Catholic Scouting, we use the Religious Emblems programs and the Scout Law to provide dynamic, "heartfelt teaching" that leads to a conversion of heart. We aren't just teaching knots; we are teaching the Way.
• SEND: Finally, Jesus sent the disciples forth to transform the world. We equip our Scouts to be "evangelizing witnesses" who promote charity and justice through service projects and leadership. We send them back to their parishes and communities as protagonists of their faith.

Be one of the first 25 to register for the July 12-18, 2026 Scouting in the Catholic Church course at https://www.philmontscoutranch.org/ptc/ptc-conferences/
before 30 April and receive a $100 gift card for use at the Tooth of Time Traders at Philmont.

See you further up the trail, Scout 🫡

We are deeply saddened by the loss of Eagle Scout and U.S. Army Reservist Declan Coady, a 20-year-old from West Des Moines and student at Drake University, who was killed in action on March 1 in Kuwait.

Posthumously promoted to sergeant, Declan served as an Information Technologies Specialist with the 103rd Sustainment Command. He was known for his quiet strength, dedication, and willingness to step forward in service to others. He deployed to Kuwait in 2025, choosing to serve his country even when he had the option not to.

We also honor the three fellow reservists who lost their lives in the same attack: Cody A. Khork, Noah L. Tietjens, and Nicole M. Amor.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to the Coady family, their loved ones, and all those impacted by this tragic loss. We honor Declan’s courage, commitment, and ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation, and we stand in support of all Gold Star families during this difficult time.

Launch of the Liberty in Action: 250th Anniversary Challenge on March 2

Scouting America is proud to announce the official launch of the new Liberty in Action: 250th Anniversary Challenge, a special program celebrating the values, service, and civic spirit that define our nation and our Scouts.

This is an opportunity for all Scouts and their families in all programs.

Beginning Monday, March 2, Scouts across the country can earn the Liberty in Action 250th Challenge patch by participating in activities that highlight patriotism, community service, responsible citizenship, and an understanding of the principles that shape our democracy. The program empowers Scouts to connect with their communities, learn about the responsibilities of citizenship, and take meaningful action that reflects the ideals of liberty, leadership, and service.

The Liberty in Action 250th Anniversary Challenge gives Scouts a powerful way to deepen their understanding of what it means to contribute to their communities and country. This initiative encourages young people to translate our shared values into actions that make a real difference.

About the Liberty in Action Patch

The Liberty in Action patch can be earned by completing a set of age‑appropriate activities such as:

-- Participating in a community service project
-- Learning about local, state, or national government
-- Exploring historical landmarks or events connected to American liberty
-- Demonstrating good citizenship within their unit, school, or neighborhood

Councils and units may also organize special events throughout the year to support Scouts pursuing this recognition.

The launch of the Liberty in Action 250th Anniversary Challenge reinforces Scouting America’s commitment to preparing young people for lives of leadership, civic responsibility, and purpose. By engaging Scouts in hands‑on learning and service, the program helps cultivate the next generation of informed, active citizens.
