It’s !
Army Private First Class William James Johnston Sr., for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty in action against the enemy. On 17 February 1944, near Padiglione, Italy, he observed and fired upon an attacking force of approximately 80 Germans, causing at least 25 casualties and forcing withdrawal of the remainder. All that day he manned his gun without relief, subject to mortar, artillery, and sniper fire. Two Germans individually worked so close to his position that his machine gun was ineffective, whereupon he killed one with his pistol, the second with a rifle taken from another soldier. When a rifleman protecting his gun position was killed by a sniper, he immediately moved the body and relocated the machine gun in that spot in order to obtain a better field of fire. He volunteered to cover the platoon's withdrawal and was the last man to leave that night. In his new position he maintained an all-night vigil, the next day causing seven German casualties. On the afternoon of the 18th, the organization on the left flank having been forced to withdraw, he again covered the withdrawal of his own organization. Shortly thereafter, he was seriously wounded over the heart, and a passing soldier saw him trying to crawl up the embankment. The soldier aided him in resuming his position behind the machine gun which was soon heard in action for about 10 minutes. Though reported killed, Pfc. Johnston was seen returning to the American lines on the morning of 19 February slowly and painfully working his way back from his overrun position through enemy lines. He gave valuable information of new enemy dispositions. His heroic determination to destroy the enemy and his disregard of his own safety aided immeasurably in halting a strong enemy attack, caused an enormous amount of enemy casualties, and so inspired his fellow soldiers that they fought for and held a vitally important position against greatly superior forces.
Johnston passed away in 1990 and rests at the State Veterans Cemetery in Connecticut.

Honoring the life of a local 101-year-old veteran

Bob Mossey' s passing marked the end of a remarkable century of life as a pillar in our community. He witnessed the tragedy of World War II, and served during the Korean war and in Vietnam.
!
At the age of 100, Bob Mossey came on the Honor Flight of Southern Colorado to Washington, D.C. A once a lifetime experience to see the memorials paying tribute to his service. The Honor Flight would become Bob's last adventure but one that formed a lasting bond with his comrades who were there to pay tribute on his final goodbye. koaa.com

From the Archives is a letter written by Sgt. Warren Olson, son of Past National President Hedwig Olson, more than 70 years ago.

The letter begins, "I would like to ask a favor of you, Mom. The Department of the Army is sponsoring a Korean Relief Fund and it has asked us to send form letters to different organizations. Form letters don't show a Korean kid with no shirt or shoes, or 800 students going to school in seven squad tents with no books, paper or pencils, and only seven teachers." He goes on to describe a local orphanage existing in a bombed-out building in which 400 children were living with few blankets or clothing, and nothing else beyond the most basic of necessities.

"The favor is this, Mom," Olson wrote. "If word of (the Army's Korean Relief Fund) comes up with the VFW Auxiliary, please throw your weight behind it. We have built roads and bridges, but this is the first attempt to help the individual children of Korea."

It is estimated that more than 100,000 children were orphaned or permanently separated from their parents during the Korean War.
Olson, a National Line Officer at the time, was supportive of then-National President Agnes Holz's special focus, saving abandoned and orphaned babies and children tragically found wandering South Korea alone, and the letter prompted the Auxiliary to establish the Aid & Education For Korean Children National Program. President Holz even sent Auxiliary representatives to aid a South Korea rescue mission in 1954.

Today is World Day for War Orphans.

This is a day set aside to recognize and remember those children worldwide who have been orphaned by war, which has always been a subject close to the hearts of VFW and VFW Auxiliary members.
For many years, the VFW National Home was a place of residence for the orphaned children of U.S. veterans. The VFW pledged to “never let the child of a veteran be raised in an institution.” The VFW Auxiliary has supported this mission since the beginning.

A century later, the National Home houses whole families, but the Auxiliary continues to highlight the needs of children who have lost a parent to combat, while also recognizing all of the children who lost one or both civilian parents to the atrocities of war.

Additionally, U.S. soldiers are presently deployed to several areas of conflict around the world, and our thoughts and hearts are with them and their families today and every day.

A life worth celebrating! Happy birthday, sir.

Norman Virgil Vikan turned 100 years old Wednesday on Christmas Day and celebrated his birthday with loved ones last week. Vikan served as a pilot in WWII and when he wasn’t in the sky he worked at Raphael’s Jewelry. “I repaired watches and I liked the intricate work. I like the customers I met through the 72 years of all countries, all states. I loved my work,” Vikan said.
