What is Juneteenth? The effective end of slavery in the United States. While President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in January of 1863, it was not until June 19th, 1865 that Union soldiers reached Texas, one of the last safe-havens for slavery, that enslaved people heard of their freedom. Later that year, the 13th Amendment abolished slavery in the United States.

Why should we honor this day? In 1979, Texas became the first State to list Juneteenth as a holiday, with the Federal Government following in 2021. While the U.S. has been celebrating the 4th of July since 1777, not all those living in America were free. Juneteenth is a day to honor where we've been in order to continue to make progress. Healthcare disparities continue to exist for people of color and that includes in mental health care.

✨ Mental health care is a right for all, not a privilege.

A big thank you to our cleanup crew and those not pictured😉

Each Spring and Fall, our Northland family gets together to clean up a portion of Highway 11 west of International Falls for our Adopt A Highway project. The first time we completed our cleanup, we ran out of bags and couldn't get the whole 2-mile stretch picked up. After a couple of years, it has improved and we complete the whole stretch, each way. By far the most common items we find are cans, bottles (plastic & glass), and fast food wrappers & packaging.

June is Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month!

Many men are taught to stay strong, push through, and handle things alone, but we want all men to know that struggling with your mental health doesn't mean you’re weak. It means you’re human.

Men are also about four times more likely to die by su***de than women, and nearly 80% of su***de deaths are men. This harrowing statistic highlights how stigma, expectations to “stay strong,” and difficulty asking for help can have serious consequences.

We want all men to know that talking to someone about how you’re feeling, whether a mental health professional or a trusted friend, is an act of strength and self-care. You don’t have to go through this alone. Northland Counseling Center is here to support you.

If you or someone you know is in crisis, text or call our crisis team at 988.

Wishing everyone a safe and fun fishing opening to our friends in Ontario. Wear your life jackets and remember, fishing can be a coping skill to support your mental health. The repetative casting, reeling, and jigging creates a rhythm that the brain and body find relaxing. We can connect with nature and fishing pals, which reduces stress and improves mood. Fishing provides a distraction from stressors and often serves as a mindfulness activity💚
