Peak solar day! Summer days may be longer to create higher day totals, but solar production is much better pound for pound in a winter minute. No humidity to block sun rays, reflectivity of sun off the snow reflects back into panels, and less electrical resistance in winter temps helps energy flow better.

Our main campus array is screaming at nearly 40,000W at 1pm and it's already surpassed the 100kW mark for the day. Selling back extra energy today!

Awesome!

Deer have the ability to see ultraviolet light, and a recent study shows they can also leave a glowing trail visible in those wavelengths, too.

Fi****ms deer season is fast approaching! 🦌

Hunters should be aware of some changes this year. Here's a quick breakdown for the season:

☝️ There is now only one fi****ms license - the B season license was eliminated. The statewide fi****ms license can be used during both the statewide fi****ms (formally known as A season) and the late southeast seasons (formerly known as B season).

💥 A regular fi****ms license is valid for either a legal buck or an antlerless deer, unless the deer permit area you hunt is bucks only. In lottery areas, the license is also only valid for legal bucks unless you were successful in the antlerless lottery drawing. Check your deer permit area (DPA) for its bag limit designation: mndnr.gov/hunting/deer/map.html

❓ There have been several changes to DPAs, so be sure to check if yours has changed at all. For example, DPA 183 was split into two new DPAs.

💥 The shotgun zone is still in place for the 2025 deer season. That will change in 2026, check out our earlier post to learn more: https://ow.ly/obfz50XmShg

🧪 Hunters that harvest a deer in chronic wasting disease (CWD) zones during fi****ms opening weekend (Nov. 8 - 9) will be required to submit a sample for testing. Learn more about your options and requirements here: mndnr.gov/deerhunt

👏 Baiting 👏 is 👏 illegal. All bait must be completely removed for 10 days prior to hunting and some counties do not allow feeding deer at all (see feeding & attractant bans: mndnr.gov/cwd/feedban.html).

🏷 If you have not already purchased your license, we strongly recommend purchasing it in-person at a qualifying vendor rather than online or over the phone. You will need your site tag to hunt the fi****ms season legally, and it may not arrive in the mail in time if you wait.

👪 If a youth hunter did not harvest a deer with a youth fi****ms license during the youth season, they are able to use their youth license for the regular fi****ms season.

✅ If you intend to harvest multiple deer, make sure you're prepared with the right combination of licenses and permits. You cannot take multiple deer with only one license or permit.

Check out our deer season FAQs for common questions: mndnr.gov/hunting/deer/deer-season-faq.html

Fi****ms season regulations are on pg. 92 of the Minnesota hunting regulations: mndnr.gov/regulations/hunting/index.html

Good luck hunters!

Brook trout are back in Money Creek! 🐟

📊 Located near Rushford, fisheries staff sampled the stream this fall and found all three year-classes of stocked brook trout present (see photo).

🔎 With this information, stocking will be paused for the next three years. We’ll be back sampling again to check if natural reproduction is occurring.

Get Paid to Collect Seeds and Cones for Minnesota’s Forests

The Minnesota DNR is looking for people to collect tree seeds and cones this fall and winter. These seeds and cones are key for growing the seedlings at the State Forest Nursery, which are used to reforest thousands of acres across Minnesota each year.

“Each bushel of seed or cones collected helps grow the next generation of Minnesota’s forests,” said Nicole Schafer, DNR seed and cone consultant. “We count on local seed sources and dedicated collectors to keep our reforestation efforts strong.”

The DNR pays for high-quality cones from native tree species. Before you head out, give your local DNR Forestry office a call to find out which species are needed and arrange a drop-off. Avoid collecting from a single yard tree as many are nonnative or cultivars, and one tree doesn’t provide enough genetic diversity.

Current high-demand species and payments:
• Jack pine: $60 per bushel for closed, ripe cones (Sept. 5–March 1)
• Black spruce: $200 per bushel for closed, ripe cones (Sept. 15–March)
• Red pine: $80 per bushel for closed, ripe cones (Peak was mid-September; some northern areas may still have closed cones)

Note: The DNR isn’t accepting additional acorns or black walnuts this fall and winter.

Cones should be ripe, closed, and free of stems, leaves and debris. Keep them in a cool, dry spot and drop them off at a Forestry Office quickly to maintain seed quality.

For more info on species, prices and collection tips, visit the DNR’s seed and cone collection page: mndnr.gov/seedcone.
