This has been an extremely heavy week after learning about the passing of Kaylee Ferguson, a senior at Byrnes High School on Monday. We’re hurting and grieving with Kaylee’s family, friends and the D5 community. There are moments, as we personally know, that there are no words other than, JESUS! JESUS! JESUS! We are praying for and love you all!

Today we provided lunch for the D5 crisis team and counselors that have been seeing students all week. Thank you all for what you’re doing and being the resource that you are. We know you’re exhausted yet pushing forward each day.

Thank you to Chick-fil-A Duncan and Carson & Amy Moore for partnering with us to provide lunch and serve the counseling team. We appreciate your love and support so much!

We’ve also learned of some local churches that have opened their doors through the week to provide a space for students to come together, grieve, and honor their friend. Thank you 🙏🏼 for being the hands and feet of Jesus.

We’d like to encourage you, if you feel led, to please comment with some encouraging/ kind words for Kaylee’s friends & family, the counseling team at the high school, and the D5 community.

❤️HOW DO I HELP MY GRIEVING TEEN?

Phil & I were so heartbroken to hear about the passing of Kaylee Ferguson from Byrnes High School. Many teens in the upstate have experienced the loss of a friend so early in the school year. I’m not a professional, but I researched some helpful tips to share.

***You can find a list of counseling resources at PJslegacyfoundation.com

LISTEN & VALIDATE
-AVOID RUSHING TO FIX: Do not offer advice or try to make them feel better right away. Instead, say things like "That sounds really hard".
-ASK OPEN QUESTIONS: Use gentle prompts like "Are there ways I can be helpful to you?" without forcing them to talk.
-ACCEPT ALL EMOTIONS: Teens might feel angry, sad, numb, or even act out. Realize that a range of feelings is completely normal.

PROVIDE STABILITY & SUPPORT
-KEEP DAILY ROUTINES: Stick to normal schedules for meals, school, and bedtimes to give them a sense of security.
-SUPPORT MEMORIAL IDEAS: Like planting a tree, attending a service, or making a memory box—can give them a tangible outlet for grief.
-CONNECTING WITH PEERS: Teens naturally lean on friends during hard times, so support their connections with other peers who understand what they are going through.

Our Mission is to embody and share the love of Christ within our community, honoring PJ’s impactful legacy, by serving and uplifting others through compassion, support and outreach.

Parker McCollum’s show at CCNB Amphitheatre at Heritage Park on August 26, 2023 was the last concert that PJ and I went to together. When I found out that I was going to have the opportunity to meet Parker last Friday at the same venue and that he was willing to sign PJ’s hat I bought him 3 years prior, I wanted to bring Parker some gifts to show my appreciation. I brought him and his crew 6 of our MADE FOR MORE t-shirts, a few of our hats, and foundation logo and SMILE BIG stickers. He was genuinely so appreciative! So much so that he came out wearing our t-shirt in front of thousands of people for the whole show and also dedicated ‘Hell of a Year’ to PJ! 🤍🙏🏼

While t-shirts, hats, and stickers are great and have provided us an ongoing tangible avenue to bring awareness to our foundation, our resources and initiatives including mental health awareness, tell PJ’s story, and provide a method of fundraising, we want to make sure everything done ultimately points people to Jesus. The meaning and goal of our ongoing MADE FOR MORE initiative all relates to the first lines of Josh Baldwin’s song:

I know who I am 'cause I know who You are
The cross of salvation was only the start
Now I am chosen, free and forgiven
I have a future and it's worth the living

We are all MADE FOR MORE through finding our identity in Jesus Christ! And God happened to provide the opportunity for me to share that message with Parker McCollum!

It’s been overwhelming seeing ALL the pictures and videos across all the social platforms of Parker wearing our shirt! Professional photographers even appearing to have intentionally capture the message on the back of his shirt. This resulted in a number of messages to PJ’s Legacy Foundation asking how to get Parker’s shirt! Thanks to Maegan Cordell and her team at PT Graphics / Palmetto Twist they’ve added the shirt to our online store!

Parker McCollum, THANK YOU doesn’t feel adequate enough to describe the appreciation we have for what transpired Friday leading up to and at the show! Thank you for your time and generosity during the meet & greet. Thank you for allowing that to be a space where I could share with you about my 16 year old son PJ and our time together August 26, 2023 for your concert at CCNB Amphitheatre at what I never thought would be our last concert together. THANK YOU for allowing me to share about our foundation we carry on his legacy through. THANK YOU for signing PJ’s hat I bought him at that concert. THANK YOU for allowing me time to FaceTime my wife and daughter that weren’t able to join me for the show. THANK YOU for the incredible surprise and coming out wearing our MADE FOR MORE t-shirt for the whole show and dedicating Hell of a Year in memory of PJ! THANK YOU for saying his name in front of thousands of people! It will truly be a night we’ll NEVER forget! THANK YOU for embodying exactly what our MADE FOR MORE initiative stands for! ❤️‍🩹💙🙏🏼
