History of Kerr County Auxiliary

A special ministry emerged in the Hill Country community in 1977 with the forming of the Youth Ranch Auxiliary. Founded by Marj Nicholson and a special group of women, the Auxiliary quickly became a major partner in helping meet the day to day needs of the children who came to live at the Ranch. With 154 members joining in that first year, the origin and growth of

the Auxiliary is an amazing story of commitment and sacrifice. Today, the Auxiliary manages a thrift store with all volunteer labor that supplies a significant part of the Ranch's annual budget. They also take the time to give birthday presents and cakes to the children, help label and mail the newsletter, and do "extended family" things like reading to the children or tutoring them, or bringing games and puzzles when they learn that one of them is home with the flu. They also help to celebrate the opening of each new residence or building with a dedication party. The Youth Ranch Auxiliary is a non-denominational, non-political ministry which has made a direct and daily difference for over thirty years in the healing of children. According to HCYR founder and director Gary Priour, "When it was formed, I did not know how vital this group would become in the evolution of the Youth Ranch. This home for wounded children would never have been built without them. It would not be the same materially or spiritually." The late Marj Nicholson, founder of the Auxiliary, urged us to always keep an open door to welcome new members, saying "As each Auxiliary member has shared love and concern for the youth of this ranch in the past, today we invite others to join us. Share in our many blessings and prayers for these youth that may be less privileged than ourselves . . ."

The Hill Country Youth Ranch Auxiliary recently gathered for our first meeting following the summer break, enjoying a wonderful luncheon while reconnecting with fellow members and learning about programs that are making a difference in the lives of young people.

Members received updates on upcoming Auxiliary activities, including plans for the Healing Hearts fundraiser to be held September 22nd at the YO, and the Boutique Healing Hearts event beginning September 28 at the HCYR Thrift Store. Board members were voted on and approved. We are so blessed to have such wonderful ladies who have given their time so selflessly.

We also had the opportunity to hear about the National Defense Cadet Corps program and its focus on leadership, character development, and preparing students for future success now at Big Springs Ranch. A wonderful new opportunity for the kids!

As always, we are grateful for the dedication of our members and supporters who help further the mission of Hill Country Youth Ranch and provide hope and opportunity for the children we serve.

Each May the HCYR Auxiliary has the honor of visiting the Hill Country Youth Ranch for lunch and a tour of the campus. This year marked a milestone 50th year of the Auxiliary, thrift store volunteers, and staff coming together in the spirit of helping the children.

This year was an extra special year as the newly remodeled library was unveiled. The library remodel was the shared dream of Glori Ball, Vicki Fisher, and founders Gary and Carol Priour. Thank you to Glori for the emotion filled, beautiful telling of her story and how her dream of helping children shaped her life.

We thank all who came together for such a special day, to Carol Priour for the lovely decorations and luncheon. For our members who were unable to share in our day you were in our thoughts and prayers. We look forward to seeing everyone again in the fall, have a safe and wonderful summer.

Yesterday we had the pleasure of gathering at the Inn of the Hills for our monthly meeting for a time of lunch and fellowship.

We are grateful to this month’s guests, Albert Hernandez, Superintendent of Big Springs Charter Schools, and James Horrall, Principal of Hill Country Youth Ranch for speaking and introducing this year’s graduating seniors. It was an honor to listen to these young minds speak of their futures. We wish them all the very best and send them with prayers on the bright paths set before them.

Look for information coming soon regarding next month’s luncheon which will be May 18th at the Hill Country Youth Ranch for a tour the campus.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who joined us for this month's Auxiliary Luncheon, where we celebrated the remarkable progress of the Hill Country Youth Ranch library and the outstanding success of this year's Spring Fling. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the volunteers who have dedicated their time and energy to enriching the lives of the children at the ranch.

A special thank you to our guest speaker, Campus Director Derik Ramos, whose passion and commitment to his work are a powerful inspiration to us all.
