Shaded bus stops, schoolyards, and public gathering spaces can become life-saving “cool zones” during extreme heat days — especially in communities with limited tree cover.

Creating shade infrastructure reduces heat stress and makes daily life safer for transit riders, youth, and seniors.

This recommendation, presented during our Climate Forum by UCLA Climate Center’s Dr. Jesse Norris, directly connects heat resilience with public space design.

Bioswales and native plant gardens naturally absorb stormwater, reduce flooding, and filter pollutants before they reach our waterways.

They’re one of the most effective “green infrastructure” tools for urban resilience.

Dr. Adrian Hightower of MWD highlighted at our Climate Forum how nature-based solutions like these protect neighborhoods from extreme rainfall and climate whiplash.

Engaging youth in greening and restoration projects builds climate leadership early.

From planting native gardens to restoring open spaces, young people become the next generation of environmental stewards.

At the Climate Resilience Forum, Theodore Payne Foundation and LATTC shared how hands-on youth programs strengthen both resilience and environmental justice.

Backup batteries can be life-saving for residents who require constant electrical power to medical devices during extreme weather events.

Southern California Edison’s Critical Care Backup Battery program offers free portable backup batteries & solar panel kits to eligible at-risk customers residing in high fire risk areas, enrolled in the Medical Baseline Allowance program, and dependent on the regular use of electrical medical equipment or devices.

This was highlighted during the CGW Climate Forum by Southern California Edison, one of our event sponsors, and urged communities to help our vulnerable neighbors enroll early.

Rain barrels and cisterns help capture stormwater before it’s lost to streets and drains, turning rainfall into a local water supply. This helps boost water independence in LA as drought cycles intensify.

Dr. Adrian Hightower, Sustainability & Resilience Manager for the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, emphasized rainwater capture as a key part of Southern California’s long-term resilience strategy during our 2025 Climate Forum.

Today we join the global movement in honoring the vast blue planet that gives us so much—and urgently needs our protection.

Let’s take a moment to reflect on just how critical the ocean is to every breath we take and every climate battle we fight. Here are five powerful truths about our oceans that remind us why this day matters:

1️⃣ The ocean produces at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen.
Yes, half the oxygen you’re breathing right now came from tiny phytoplankton floating in the sea. Often overlooked, these microscopic heroes are the beating lungs of Earth. Without a thriving ocean, our atmosphere—and our lives—would collapse.

2️⃣ It absorbs about 30% of carbon dioxide emissions.
The ocean is one of the world’s most powerful carbon sinks, acting as a natural buffer against the climate crisis. Every wave, every tide is silently working to stabilize our planet. But this comes at a cost—acidification is rising, and marine ecosystems are struggling to survive.

3️⃣ There are an estimated 75 to 199 million tonnes of plastic currently in the ocean.
From floating bottle caps to ghost fishing nets, our plastic addiction has made its way into even the deepest trenches of the sea. Wildlife is entangled, ecosystems are disrupted, and microplastics are infiltrating the food chain—yes, even the seafood on our plates.

4️⃣ Microplastics have been found in 60% of fish and 1 in 3 fish consumed by humans.
Plastic pollution isn’t just a marine issue—it’s a human health concern. What enters the ocean doesn’t stay there. It comes back to us in the form of microscopic debris in our drinking water, in the seafood we eat, and even in the air we breathe.

5️⃣ There are currently over 400 ‘dead zones’ across the globe.
These are areas of the ocean where oxygen levels are so low, marine life can’t survive. One of the largest sits right in the Gulf of Mexico, stretching over 6,700 square miles. These zones are caused by pollution—particularly agricultural runoff—and they are growing.

The ocean sustains us, stabilizes the climate, and feeds billions. And it’s crying out for our care.

We are excited to announce that the final five (5) trees have been planted in Dominguez Hills! 🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳

Our tree plantings are part of our Urban Forestry program which serves disadvantaged communities in South LA and the surrounding areas. Many of these areas have less than 10% tree canopy, and suffer from related environmental and mental health challenges. Trees planted in the urban environment have a positive impact, build community resiliency against water pollution and climate change, and provide opportunities to enjoy green space and therefore improve mental wellbeing.

In 2025, we are pursuing planting in the city of Carson and the gateway cities to expand our reach geographically!
