U.S.VETS—Inglewood

U.S.VETS—Inglewood U.S.VETS is a nonprofit providing housing & support services to homeless and at-risk veterans.

U.S.VETS — Inglewood is the inaugural site for United States Veterans Initiative and is the model upon which all the other sites were based. Since opening our doors in 1993, U.S.VETS — Inglewood has served more than 10,000 veterans. Our site provides drug & alcohol-free housing for veterans with comprehensive supportive services including individual case management, counseling, employment assistan

ce, job placement, and social activities. Our Core Housing Programs:
VETERANS IN PROGRESS (VIP): The VIP work re-entry program prepares veterans to obtain and maintain employment while providing comprehensive support including housing, counseling, and basic needs. FATHERS PROGRAM: The Fathers Program assists non-custodial fathers to become more emotionally and financially involved in their children's lives and helps them find employment along with comprehensive support. HIGH BARRIERS PROGRAM: The High Barriers program works with veterans who have additional obstacles to overcome in seeking employment including advanced age, a history of felonies and incarceration, or long periods of unemployment. SUBSTANCE ABUSE SERVICES COORDINATION AGENCY (SASCA): The SASCA program works in conjunction with a community parolee program to provide case management, substance abuse education, and re-entry programs for veterans. LONG-TERM SUPPORTIVE HOUSING: Many veterans choose to live in a sober, veteran-specific community and the Long-Term Supportive Housing provides affordable, sober, service-enriched rental housing for vets with employment or other income such as disability. PERMANENT HOUSING: In 2011 Westside II opened with 196 beds of Permanent Housing for low-income veterans. WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT: The Workforce Development Department offers career counseling, training, interviewing skills, job placement services, and employment support to veterans. Residency at U.S.VETS is NOT required for veterans to access the Workforce services.

Last week in Sacramento, we joined fellow grantees in the California Department of Veterans Affairs' Veterans Support to Self-Reliance housing pilot to share progress, strengthen partnerships and advocate for the future of this work.

Now in its third year, pilot results show that pairing housing for older veterans with structured, on-site support, improves well-being:
📌 Increased housing stability
📌 Fewer missed medical appointments
📌 Better nutrition
📌 Greater engagement with peers and community

Across California, 469 veterans—including more than 100 served by U.S.VETS—are on the path to lasting benefits.

Teams also met with state legislators to advocate for long-term investment in the model. A state interim report affirms its effectiveness and points to opportunities to expand this work, scaling services and sustaining support.

We celebrated an incredible night at our U.S.VETS SALUTE Gala honoring Katie Rodan, MD, visionary co-founder of Proactiv and Rodan + Fields and co-lead of the Rodan Family Foundation, and the Los Angeles Chargers for extraordinary commitment to veterans in need.

Rodan was recognized with the Judge Harry Pregerson Public Service Award, named for her father, founder of U.S.VETS, and presented by U.S.VETS retired President and CEO Steve Peck and her mother, Bernardine Pregerson. We saluted the Chargers with the Community Impact Award, presented by actor Mario Lopez and accepted by A.G. Spanos, the Chargers’ president of business operations.

We’re grateful to all who joined us to raise more than $500,000 to prevent and end veteran homelessness, including Marla Tellez of Fox 11 Los Angeles, actor and Army veteran Jensen Atwood, our Board members, sponsors—among them FOX and U.S. Bank—and friends.

KTLA's Dayna Devon was onsite today filming an upcoming Veterans Day segment to kick off Make Camo Your Cause to .

We're grateful to national board member Jerry Neuman who arranged the meeting to share the work U.S.VETS is doing to end veteran homelessness and get veterans back on their feet.

Success stories like resident Thomas Boyer whose skateboard design hobby is gaining traction as a potential business opportunity are at the heart of why we're passionate about what we do!

When Yolanda Caldwell looked over a list of apartments from the U.S.VETS property and income coordinator, she zeroed in on one with two bedrooms. Her sons would have their own space to hang up superhero posters and display cherished Cars movie collectibles.

The Army National Guard veteran and her family moved into their Long Beach home this year through U.S.VETS’ master leasing program, which matches veterans who have been homeless or are at-risk of losing homes with hundreds of properties around the country. The initiative, supported by The Home Depot Foundation’s Veteran Permanent Housing Stabilization Pilot Project, ensures a smooth move in and helps with tenant repairs, case management, income and benefit support and after-care as veterans adjust in permanent homes.

“If it wasn’t for this program, I don’t know where I’d be right now,” Caldwell says. “Since 2023, it’s been really challenging. We were staying in hotels and it was expensive. I was running out of money.”

The family spent time in a shelter for women and children, but her adult son, who has special needs, could not stay there because of policies about men in the program. Caldwell made the difficult decision to have him live apart from the family out of state. That arrangement, and another experience with what she describes as a nightmare landlord made her question whether she’d ever find a safe, stable home. Until now.

“I made it very warm and cozy for us,” she says of her new place, which she plans to be in while she saves to buy a home. Her oldest son celebrated his birthday in the apartment, and her youngest son just started high school at a neighborhood campus. A “thankful” pillow on her couch, fresh paint and seascape paintings create a retreat.

“They went through a lot and right now they’re at peace,” she says of her sons. “Since we’ve been here everybody around us is so friendly. My sons enjoy being here.”
