Himler House is the former home of Colonel Martin Himler, an early twentieth-century Hungarian immigrant coal mining entrepreneur and World War II Office of Strategic Services officer and Congressional Gold Medal recipient.

On September 19, 2026, the Martin County Historical and Genealogical Society, Inc., hosted East Tennessee State University Professor, David “Stokes” Piercy, for a Collier Center luncheon presentation about his upcoming feature-length documentary, “Himler: Coal To Colonel.” The documentary is funded by the American-Hungarian Fulbright Commission and seeks to build cultural bridges based on common history between Appalachia and Hungary. Luncheon guests came from KY, TN, GA, and FL, and guests included descendants of the Himlerville Jakab, Mandt, and Knausz families. Professor Piercy explained the process of producing the documentary, and luncheon attendees shared their treasured Himlerville experiences with Professor Piercy.

Labor Day is the day that we honor Americans who labor and have labored to make our country the best place to live in the world. Martin Himler came to America to find work and to help other immigrants find work.
