"Having gone through cancer myself, I understand how tough the journey can be. I wanted to give back, and Road To Recovery was the exact right fit. The sign-up process was simple, and I like that I can choose rides that work around my schedule. 🛣️

One of my favorite experiences was driving a patient receiving dialysis treatments for kidney cancer. We connected over a shared love of sports and baseball, and our rides turned into a great friendship, but eventually, he was cleared to drive himself.

Then, by total chance, we bumped into each other months later at a community meeting. We both still joke that fate had a hand in bringing us back together.” – Wally B.

🦸‍♀️ You don’t need superpowers to make a difference. Sign up to drive at cancer.org/drive and become someone’s hero.

“I thought I was in the clear after being treated for melanoma in 2004. But since then, I’ve faced skin cancer SIX more times, including both squamous and basal cell carcinoma.” – Kathy O.

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the U.S. Kathy’s experience is a reminder that prevention and early detection matter at every age.

☀️ Just five blistering sunburns before you turn 20 can raise your risk of melanoma by 80%.

What you can do:
🧴 Wear sunscreen every day, even on cloudy ones
🧢 Cover up with hats, sleeves, and shades
🔎 Check your skin often and don’t ignore changes

🧬 Every cell has a genetic light switch, but in cancer, the wrong ones get flipped.

At the Purdue Institute for Cancer Research, Dr. Emily Dykhuizen, PhD, is studying how cells decide which genes to turn on and off, and how this goes wrong in cancer. With support from our research grants, she’s working to develop new compounds that can help reset those switches and stop cancer in its tracks.

🎗️ “I was diagnosed with Squamous Cell Carcinoma inside my nose in June 2023. I thought it was just chapped from winter’s cold, but I realized it was still bothering me in spring.

Initially, we tried to cut it away piece by piece, but scans kept coming back with cancer cells. By September, the cancer was stage 4. My surgeon gave me a choice: we could continue what we were doing, or we could remove my entire nose. I told them, ‘Take my nose. If the cancer is aggressive, let’s be aggressive.’

Throughout, I knew I had to train my mind to be strong, and it would push my body to follow. Having that mindset, along with my faith, was the ultimate Dream Team. It allowed me to be thankful for every success and milestone along the way. And I did it. After 12 weeks of radiation, I was deemed cancer-free in March 2024. I beat cancer.” – Reggie J.

1 in 3 people will face cancer in their lifetime. But with your support, we can help more people like Reggie not just survive but thrive.

“After losing my best friend to cancer in 2022, I decided to retire, but I was not good at sitting around the house enjoying my ‘Golden Years.’

That’s when a longtime friend told me about Road To Recovery. Now, I get to get out and help other people in a time of need. I can select when I drive. I can set my schedule around any of the retired guy stuff I might want to do. Being a volunteer driver means so much to me.” – Karl K.

🚗 “I enjoy driving for Road To Recovery because it feels good to do something for someone who is going through a difficult time.

Both of my parents had cancer. I have had cancer. I figured I could handle driving patients to and from their appointments, and I might even have other things in common with them.” – Mark M.

🩺 Oncology nurses aren’t just caregivers — they’re advocates, allies, and everyday heroes. Kelly H., RN, BSN, OCN, shares what makes this work so meaningful:

💬 “I love the special bond I get to build with my patients. I love listening to their stories, bringing comfort during difficult times, and helping them navigate next steps. I love just being there for the sake of being there. We learn to laugh a lot and celebrate all the victories, big and small.

I have a quote on my desk: ‘Oncology nurses make a very hard journey easier.’ And that’s truly what we do. We laugh together, we cry together, and we fight together.”

Thank you, Kelly, for the difference you make! 👏
