The 2026 Golden Shovel Competition was more than just a construction competition. It was a chance for education and industry to come together and invest in the next generation of Indiana’s workforce.

This year, high school students from across Indiana competed alongside ICI member contractors in a hands-on challenge that put their civil construction skills to the test. From operating equipment to working as a team and completing the job safely, the Golden Shovel gives students an opportunity to experience the industry in a way that a classroom simply can’t replicate.

And the best part? The industry showed up.

More than 100 Franklin Central Civil Construction Pathway students have now earned their flagger certification.

That’s a major milestone for a program helping build Indiana’s next generation of civil construction workers.

Students in Mr. Schroll’s classes recently completed ATSSA Flagger Certification Training, gaining a credential and real-world safety skills they can take directly to the jobsite.

The workforce pipeline is being built now, in classrooms across Indiana.

There’s only so much you can learn from a textbook. Sometimes, you have to get out there and do the work.

Students from a Civil Construction Pathway class from Franklin Central High School recently took their classroom learning to the jobsite during a concrete sandbox day hosted at MacAllister Machinery.

From preparing the site to placing and finishing concrete, students got to work alongside industry professionals and experience the process from start to finish. They asked questions, picked up new skills, and got a firsthand look at what a career in civil construction can really look like.

Hands-on experiences like this help students connect what they’re learning in the classroom to the work happening in the field and give them a chance to see themselves in the industry.

Work IN Roads was proud to join ICI member companies at Purdue University for the Purdue BSC/CE/CEM & ICI Heavy Highway, Civil, and Utility Contractors Career Fair.

It was great to see the next generation of civil construction professionals connect with industry employers and learn more about the opportunities available in the industry.

Involvement at events like this is important to building relationships, creating opportunities, and helping shape the future of Indiana’s civil construction industry.

Members of Work IN Roads and Women IN Roads were proud to spend the day supporting the Construction Family Assistance Foundation at its Annual Golf Outing.

The event brings the construction industry together to raise support for construction workers and their families facing the challenges of life-changing workplace injuries.

With Indiana Constructors, Inc. sponsoring a hole, Work IN Roads and Women IN Roads were able to represent their programs, connect with industry members, and share more about the work being done to build the next generation of civil construction professionals.

Thank you to the CFA Foundation for bringing the industry together for a great cause!

Summer may be over for the students across the state, but our work to build the next generation of civil construction professionals doesn’t stop. 🚧

This summer, Work IN Roads brought together educators from across Indiana for teacher training, hosted Girls Construction Camps led by women in the industry, gathered industry supporters at the Work IN Roads Golf Outing, and created new blogs and short-form videos to inspire students to explore careers in civil construction.

From classrooms to job sites, we’re proud of the people and organizations who continue to invest in Indiana’s future workforce. Here’s a look back at an incredible summer! 📸
