Following Christ’s Call – In Lent and Beyond
More than 40 Guild members gathered in the Father Courtney Room at St. Luke Catholic Church for our annual Lenten Morning of Reflection. The morning was led by Fr. James Farrell, who invited us to consider what it truly means to follow Christ’s call.
Through Scripture, personal stories from his priestly ministry, and the witness of great faith from “ordinary” people he has encountered along the way, Fr. Jim reminded us that holiness is lived in everyday moments. He guided us in a quiet reflection to become more aware of Christ’s presence and to enter into a deeply personal conversation with Jesus.
Our morning concluded with a beautiful celebration of the Mass, during which the Guild members, the Residents, and the Little Sisters of the Poor were all held in prayer. We are grateful to our lector, Elisabeth Groot, our Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, Josette Snellen, and to the talented musicians—Buff Whaley, Beth Beyke, and Joanne Mandel—who enriched our liturgy.
Hospitality, one of the pillars of the Little Sisters of the Poor, was beautifully evident throughout the gathering. We extend heartfelt thanks to the planning committee—Joanne Mandel, Anne Heid, Elisabeth Groot, and Mary Short—for their thoughtful preparation. Special thanks to Josette Snellen for securing our new location, and to all who generously provided refreshments: Patricia Marchino, Barbara Hendrickson, Sue Bailey, Mary Anne Noble, Eileen Kaczmarek, Bernadette Hengesbacher, Mary Patout, and members of the planning committee.
For those who were unable to attend, we offer the following images and questions for your Lenten reflection. The accompanying photographs feature the table decorations representing the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary, lovingly prepared by Virlee Weaver. Virlee spoke beautifully about the rituals and traditions of our faith and the rich symbolism that draws us more deeply into the mystery of Christ’s redeeming love. Thank you, Virlee, for sharing your gift and helping us enter more deeply into the sacred journey of Lent.
As you reflect on these mysteries, may they inspire you to follow Christ’s call in Lent and beyond:
The Agony in the Garden In our suffering, God always gives us the grace to unite ourselves with Jesus in the Father’s plan of redemption. How many times have I agonized over a situation and asked, “Why me?”
The Scourging at the Pillar As you contemplate Christ’s wounds, place before Him your anxieties and weaknesses, remembering that He endured this for us. How have I hurt someone by what I have said or done?
The Crowning with Thorns Reflect on the crown of thorns and embrace repentance. Forgive those who have failed you, just as we have all failed our Savior. How have I criticized, blamed, gossiped, or been judgmental?
The Carrying of the Cross Jesus bore the heavy burden of our sins. Though some disciples abandoned Him, He will never abandon us. Do I trust in Christ to carry me through tough situations?
The Crucifixion Through His suffering and death, Christ redeemed us. We are invited to unite our own suffering with prayer, bringing His redeeming love into the world. How do I handle a situation when I feel persecuted? Do I point out others' faults?
