St. Augustine Home Guild

St. Augustine Home Guild The St. Augustine Guild is dedicated to aiding The Little Sisters of the Poor in the operation of St. Augustine Home for the Aged, in Indianapolis, Indiana.

We do this by volunteering at the home as well as holding two fundraising events during the year. Augustine Home Guild (originally the St. Augustine Guild) was founded more than 50 years ago to support the mission of the Little Sisters of the Poor in Indianapolis. Guild members provide thousands of volunteer hours annually, making beds, helping in the kitchen, doing laundry, working on clerical ta

sks, visiting with the Residents, planning celebrations and parties for the home, and organizing fundraising events.

The annual June General Meeting was held on Wednesday, June 3, 2026. A beautiful luncheon was catered by Cater Me Cafe, and table decor was crafted by Angie Bagnoli. The HOTS (Hats Off To Spring) Committee lead by Mary Coyle and Mary Patout, were delighted to announce the outstanding success of its annual fundraising event benefiting the Little Sisters of the Poor and St. Augustine Home for the Aged in Indianapolis.
Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of sponsors, donors, attendees, and volunteers, this year's event raised an impressive $144,000 to support the mission and ministry of the Little Sisters and the residents they serve. The Sisters plan to purchase a mobility van that is needed to transport residents to appointments. The additional funds raised will help ensure that St. Augustine Home for the Aged can continue its vital work of caring for seniors in need.
The St. Augustine Home Guild extends its heartfelt gratitude to everyone whose contributions made this achievement possible. Your generosity and support have made a meaningful difference in the lives of the residents and the Little Sisters of the Poor. We look forward to continuing our mission of service and support for the residents of St. Augustine Home for the Aged.

A fun task in the Guild is as driver to the Little Sisters of the Poor - St. Augustine Home when they visit local parishes and beg. Guild members have the privilege of spending time one on one with the sisters as they travel around the diocese getting to know them on a personal level. It also allows Guild members to share with parishioners about their volunteer efforts at the home.❤️ Thank you to Father Dale Ehrman and staff for graciously welcoming the Sisters and the Guild to St. John Vianney.

New Bus Blessed — Let the Adventures Begin!

Joy filled St. Augustine Home on February 17 as our new 14-passenger, wheelchair-accessible bus was blessed by Fr. Jude Nwaigwa and Sr. Michael. Mother Maria Christine shared heartfelt gratitude on behalf of the residents and the Little Sisters of the Poor to the St. Augustine Home Guild and all the generous benefactors who made this possible.

Residents celebrated with handmade thank-you signs and commemorative buttons for the inaugural rides. A fun “Name the Bus” activity is now underway! During the first rides around the property on West 86th Street, residents and Sisters eagerly shared where they hope to go next.

More than transportation, this bus means connection — to the Indiana State Fair, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra performances, local plays, favorite restaurants, and the wider Indianapolis community. These outings bring joy, enrichment, and meaningful engagement to our residents.

This wonderful gift was made possible through the success of the 2025 “Hats Off to Spring” (HOTS) fundraiser. Thank you to our HOTS Chairs Beth Hansen and Mary Patout, the committee, sponsors, donors, advertisers, and all who support SAHG.

Because of you, the journey continues. 💙

Following Christ’s Call – In Lent and Beyond

More than 40 Guild members gathered in the Father Courtney Room at St. Luke Catholic Church for our annual Lenten Morning of Reflection. The morning was led by Fr. James Farrell, who invited us to consider what it truly means to follow Christ’s call.

Through Scripture, personal stories from his priestly ministry, and the witness of great faith from “ordinary” people he has encountered along the way, Fr. Jim reminded us that holiness is lived in everyday moments. He guided us in a quiet reflection to become more aware of Christ’s presence and to enter into a deeply personal conversation with Jesus.

Our morning concluded with a beautiful celebration of the Mass, during which the Guild members, the Residents, and the Little Sisters of the Poor were all held in prayer. We are grateful to our lector, Elisabeth Groot, our Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, Josette Snellen, and to the talented musicians—Buff Whaley, Beth Beyke, and Joanne Mandel—who enriched our liturgy.

Hospitality, one of the pillars of the Little Sisters of the Poor, was beautifully evident throughout the gathering. We extend heartfelt thanks to the planning committee—Joanne Mandel, Anne Heid, Elisabeth Groot, and Mary Short—for their thoughtful preparation. Special thanks to Josette Snellen for securing our new location, and to all who generously provided refreshments: Patricia Marchino, Barbara Hendrickson, Sue Bailey, Mary Anne Noble, Eileen Kaczmarek, Bernadette Hengesbacher, Mary Patout, and members of the planning committee.

For those who were unable to attend, we offer the following images and questions for your Lenten reflection. The accompanying photographs feature the table decorations representing the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary, lovingly prepared by Virlee Weaver. Virlee spoke beautifully about the rituals and traditions of our faith and the rich symbolism that draws us more deeply into the mystery of Christ’s redeeming love. Thank you, Virlee, for sharing your gift and helping us enter more deeply into the sacred journey of Lent.

As you reflect on these mysteries, may they inspire you to follow Christ’s call in Lent and beyond:

The Agony in the Garden In our suffering, God always gives us the grace to unite ourselves with Jesus in the Father’s plan of redemption. How many times have I agonized over a situation and asked, “Why me?”

The Scourging at the Pillar As you contemplate Christ’s wounds, place before Him your anxieties and weaknesses, remembering that He endured this for us. How have I hurt someone by what I have said or done?

The Crowning with Thorns Reflect on the crown of thorns and embrace repentance. Forgive those who have failed you, just as we have all failed our Savior. How have I criticized, blamed, gossiped, or been judgmental?

The Carrying of the Cross Jesus bore the heavy burden of our sins. Though some disciples abandoned Him, He will never abandon us. Do I trust in Christ to carry me through tough situations?

The Crucifixion Through His suffering and death, Christ redeemed us. We are invited to unite our own suffering with prayer, bringing His redeeming love into the world. How do I handle a situation when I feel persecuted? Do I point out others' faults?
