Most people think about what happens after a shooting, but much of the work Indy Peace does happens before one occurs.

Indy Peace helps prevent violence through conflict mediation, life coaching, employment support, hospital-based intervention, and relationship-building with those most at risk.

Indianapolis has seen a 16% decrease in criminal homicides and a 26.4% decrease in nonfatal shootings compared to the same time last year. These improvements happen when the community comes together. Prevention works.

Every conversation matters. Every relationship matters. Every life matters.

Shout out to Officer Joseph Sims!

Officer Sims, a 10-year veteran of IMPD, was recently honored with the Bridging the Gap Award, recognizing his commitment to strengthening Indianapolis neighborhoods, building community relationships, and mentoring youth.

Throughout 2025, Officer Sims went above and beyond his patrol duties on the Southeast District by volunteering with Indy PAL, using basketball as a tool to mentor and encourage young people. Through his leadership, he continues to build confidence, trust, and life skills both on and off the court.

Outside of his work with IMPD, Officer Sims also volunteers with , where he engages youth in honest conversations about responsibility, personal growth, and law enforcement, helping break down barriers and strengthen community trust.

Officer Sims represents the very best of public service, mentorship, and community connection. Congrats, Officer Sims, and thank you for making a difference across Indy! 👏

Have you ever wondered why people wear orange during ?

The movement began in honor of Hadiya Pendleton, a 15-year-old Chicago student whose life was cut short by gun violence in 2013. Orange was chosen because it is the color hunters wear to protect themselves and others. Today, it serves as a symbol of safety, awareness, and hope.

This month, we honor the lives lost to gun violence, support survivors, and recognize the individuals and organizations working every day to create safer communities. At Indy Peace, we believe violence is preventable. Through relationships, resources, and community support, we are helping build a safer Indianapolis for everyone.

A mentor can change everything!

During , we’re recognizing the importance of positive role models in helping young people thrive.

Through Indy PAL, young people gain more than athletic skills; they build confidence, foster relationships, and find a community. Positive connections today help create safer futures tomorrow for Indy's young people. That’s what strategic prevention looks like. 💙
