To establish and provide training for a core group of emergency communicators in Marion County and to provide communications duty in public service when disaster strikes. The Amateur Radio Emergency Service® (ARES) consists of licensed amateurs who have voluntarily registered their qualifications and equipment, with their local ARES leadership, for communications duty in the public service when di

saster strikes. ARES Membership Requirements

Every licensed amateur, regardless of membership in ARRL or any other local or national organization is eligible to apply for membership in ARES. Hey - are you like some of us: too close for 40m or have a poorly situated antenna in the Indianapolis area to catch the W9IMS special event station on HF? In addition to a possible day of race 2m opportunity, send an APRS message to W9IMS-15 to officially get in the log! Watch for their beacon for QSL information and the ‘ack’ to your message to know you got in!

That's a wrap on Severe Weather Preparedness Week.

You've thought about your kit.

You've practiced on the net.

We hope you have learned something new.

We don't do this because it's mandated. We do it because when the sirens actually sound, somebody needs to know the right frequency, the right procedure, and the right mindset.

Let's keep that momentum going.

Your home's severe weather plan isn't much good if you don't have backup power. Batteries die. The grid goes down. A handheld radio and a plan keep you in the loop. Make sure your radios are charged or have fresh batteries. Make sure someone in your household knows how to use them. Make sure you know the frequencies.

It's tornado drill day. Our training Skywarn net is live at 10:00 AM on normal Skywarn frequencies. (146.760 pl 151.4 *AND* 443.250 pl 100).

The statewide drill follows at 10:15. This is real-world practice. We will use it to report siren status. But you should also take advantage of the time to ask questions if you're unsure about format or procedures.

The goal is muscle memory, so when the actual warning comes, you're ready.
