Today, January 9th, is National Law Enforcement Day! On this day, and every day, we should pause to Remember, Honor, and say Thank You to all police officers and law enforcement personnel, and let them know that we appreciate their service and sacrifice.

Although the Beyond the Badge 5K event has ended, we continue to honor those officers, past and present, through our scholarship fund, which assists students studying law enforcement and public safety. Please consider donating to this fund at www.heroesofpublicsafety.org. Thank You!

September 17th marked the 21st Anniversary since one of Marion County’s finest was shot and killed in one of the longest sustained gun battles in Indiana history. While the Beyond the Badge 5K Run & Walk is no longer held, the Jason Baker Foundation continues to provide scholarship assistance to the next generation of Public Safety Officers.

To help continue Jason’s legacy please consider doing a virtual 5K run or today or sometime soon. You can even gather with family or friends and do your own event at Crown Hill. What a great time of year to walk, jog or bike along the paths of beauty inside Crown Hill, and stop by the Heroes of Public Safety Memorial to reflect on past Beyond the Badge 5K events, and pause to remember our fallen.

You might even run into Jason’s father or other family members at the Heroes of Public Safety Memorial as they commemorate that awful day 21 years ago when their 24 year old son was shot and killed defending the residents of Indiana.

Of course, we welcome any amount, and this annual tax-deductible gift will show your support for our Public Safety Heroes who continue to serve every day.

Thank You! 20 Years! You Did It! After 20 years of the Jason M. Baker Beyond the Badge 5K Run/Walk, we find that it is time to bring the event to a close. This was a very difficult choice for our family. Age, health, and other factors have gone into this decision. We tried meeting with other organizations that were interested in continuing the event, but we felt it would lose some of the character and the primary mission of honoring “Those that have served, Those that are serving, & Those that will serve,” as well as “Never Forgetting” the survivors left behind! See the list of great achievements over the past 20 years below.

Do not despair though. Your support over the last 20 years have allowed us to establish the scholarships for future generations in perpetuity! The Jason Baker Foundation, Inc., which provides the scholarships, is not going away, and will continue to invest in students and the next generation of public safety workers. We will keep the website updated, and we will maintain the scholarship recipients’ profiles.

Make this a part of your annual giving every September. Visit Crown Hill Cemetery on a Sunday morning in mid-September, walk, run or bike the beautiful grounds on your own, remember all the Beyond the Badge 5Ks of the past, and donate your usual entry fees at that time. Who knows, you might even run into Jerry Baker and/or others doing the same thing.

Our website will keep you up to date on the scholarship and its recipients, and you can also donate through the Donations page. Continue to follow our social media pages as well. The Jason Baker Foundation, Inc. is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization.

Here is what was accomplished over the past 20 years:

--- Provided scholarship assistance for 144 semesters of college ($4,000 per semester). That equates to 72 college years of education for our next generation officers!

--- Awarded renewable scholarships to 29 students seeking degrees in a public safety field!

--- Recognized & honored all the officers who lost their lives in the line of duty each year!

--- Recognized, honored & thanked the families of officers who were killed in the line of duty!

--- Raised awareness & recognition of the commitment necessary to serve in public safety today by including our scholarship recipients in the program, having the IMPD Academy classes & the ISP Academy classes of recruits participate annually in the event.

A final note. We will miss all of you.

In honor of , we would like to highlight the Jason Baker Foundation, a Not for Profit that is near and dear to MCSO.

Jerry Baker, father of Fallen Deputy Jason Baker, recently stopped by to give Katie Carlson, the MCSO Director of Wellness Initiatives, a limited-edition medal commemorating the 20th Anniversary of the Beyond the Badge 5K and Family Stroll. Carlson has organized the MCSO’s participation in Beyond the Badge 5K since 2013, steadily increasing participation and funds raised, while reminding MCSO staff of the significance and meaning of the event.

The 5K raises funds for the Jason Baker Foundation, which awards scholarships to students pursuing a career in public safety.
