POW MIA Council of Indianapolis, Inc. The POW/MIA Council of Indianapolis is dedicated to preserving the memory of our nation's veterans. Annual day of remembrance: 3rd Friday in September

Until July 18, 1979, no commemoration was held to honor America’s POW-MIAs, those returned and those still missing and unaccounted for from our nation’s wars. That first year, resolutions were passed in the Congress and the national ceremony was held at the National Cathedral, Washington, D.C. National POW-MIA Recognition Day legislation was introduced yearly, until 1996 when it was deemed by Congress that legislation designating special commemorative days would no longer be considered by Congress. In an effort to accommodate all returned POWs and all Americans still missing and unaccounted for from all wars, the National League of Families proposed the third Friday in September, a date not associated with any particular war and not in conjunction with any organization’s national convention. National POW-MIA Recognition Day ceremonies are now held throughout the nation and around the world on military installations, ships at sea, state capitols, at schools, churches, national Veteran and civic organizations, police and fire departments, fire stations, etc.

🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸 The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office was honored to assist the Indiana State Police with the es**rt of U.S. Navy 1st Class Fireman Fred H. Boyer, a Hoosier who made the ultimate sacrifice during the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Navy 1st Class Fireman Boyer, originally from Tipton County, was just 22 years old when he was killed aboard the USS West Virginia on December 7, 1941. He was one of 106 crew members who lost their lives during the attack.

In July 2024, after more than 82 years, Fireman Boyer was finally identified, and his remains are now being returned home to Indiana.

It is difficult to put into words the honor of being part of this es**rt. More than eight decades after he gave his life serving our country, Navy 1st Class Fireman Boyer is back home today.

Today, we remember Navy 1st Class Fireman Boyer, honor his service, and sacrifice, and extend our deepest respect to his family. Thank you to the Indiana State Police for the invitation to be part of this historic homecoming. 🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸

Today, the 3rd Friday of September, is National POW/MIA Recognition Day. Today is the only official national day of observance dedicated entirely to honoring Americans who were prisoners of war or remain missing and unaccounted for - from all conflicts, in all theaters, and from every branch of service.

We commend Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency and Defense Intelligence Agency – Stony Beach’s continued efforts in recovering, identifying, and repatriating the missing and unaccounted.

The best way to honor these men and women is to spread awareness, such as by talking to your elected representatives or within your community. By demonstrating the strong American resolve to achieve the fullest possible accounting, both to U.S. government officials and to foreign governments, we can ensure that the DPAA and DIA-SB have the resources required to achieve the fullest possible accounting. From the Vietnam War alone, 1,565 Americans remain missing. So far in FY2026, the DPAA has identified 183 personnel from World War II, 46 from the Korean War, and 1 from the Vietnam War. Congress can make certain that the focus on Vietnam War accounting is not lost, and that DPAA is able to pursue its own stated operational priority alongside increased focus on other conflicts.

Succeeding in this mission means bringing closure to families who have been living with uncertainty for far too long. On this National POW/MIA Recognition Day, we ask that you recognize those who are not forgotten; and then, beyond remembering and memorializing, help spread awareness to your neighbors and your elected officials so that our country can truly honor them.

🇺🇸 The Indiana POW/MIA Council sponsors this ceremony for youth on the evening prior to POW/MIA Day at the Indiana War Memorial in Indianapolis.
The youth post the flags on the IWM lawn, then adjourn inside to the auditorium to read aloud all 1,700+ Indiana MIA names from WWII, the Korean War, and Vietnam War in groups.
They also tour 10 areas of the museum in a rotation when not reading aloud, where volunteer costumes interpreters offer living history discussions from different war times in American history. 🇺🇸
