DirectEmployers Institute

DirectEmployers Institute DirectEmployers Institute is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing learning to life for socioeconomically disadvantaged students.

The National Science Foundation reports that since 2004, growth in STEM jobs has been 3 times faster than in non-STEM jobs, with STEM workers earning 26% more than non-STEM counterparts. However, women comprise only 24% of the jobs in technical or STEM fields and African Americans and Latinos each comprise only 3% of the technical workforce. DirectEmployers Association envisions a future in which

students who are low income, from underrepresented groups, and have disabilities gain hands-on project-based experiences and workplace learning opportunities with local employers to prepare them to enter high wage careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) and explore contemporary business practices with local employers. To achieve this vision, we work closely with educational and youth-serving organizations to identify high potential, socioeconomically disadvantaged students and match them with employers that are committed to increasing equality and diversity in their workforce.

πŸŽ‰ Day 1 of STEM YES! Summer Camp was a success! πŸŽ‰

Our students arrived ready to learn, engage, and have fun, bringing positive energy from the moment they walked through the door.

We kicked off the day with Human Bingo, giving campers the opportunity to get to know one another, break the ice, and build new connections. The room quickly filled with laughter, conversation, and excitement as everyone became more comfortable and confident.

Next, we welcomed a group of forensic science professionals who shared valuable insights into their careers. Campers learned what forensic scientists do, how they investigate cases, and the impact their work has on our communities. The students were fascinated by the knowledge and experiences shared.

The learning continued with hands-on forensic science activities, including fingerprint identification, footprint matching, and substance identification. Students put their critical thinking skills to work while experiencing what it’s like to solve real-world forensic challenges.

After a morning full of discovery, our campers enjoyed a delicious lunch generously provided by Outback Steakhouse. πŸ”πŸŸ

We wrapped up the day by learning the importance of professional handshakes and first impressions, helping students build communication and networking skills that will serve them well in the future.

Day 1 set the bar high, and we’re just getting started! Stay tuned for a special sneak peek of tomorrow’s field trip. πŸ‘€

This moment right here is WHY we do what we do. πŸ’š

When Adalia walked into the office today, she wasn't feeling herself. Doubt had crept in. She wasn't sure she could do it.

But she stayed. She tried. She pushed through.

And then β€” her Dubot lit up and wrote two words:

✨ HELLO, SAY YES. ✨

She didn't just get the Dubot working. She proved something to herself that no one can ever take away.

That is the spirit of STEM YES! That is the attitude we are building and instilling in every single student who walks through our doors. We don't just teach STEM skills β€” we teach young people to believe they belong in every room, at every table, in front of every challenge.

Adalia, we are so proud of you. You said YES today. πŸ™ŒπŸΎ

Camp starts in just a few days and we cannot WAIT to see what these students are going to accomplish. Are you ready? πŸ‘€

It takes a village to build the next generation β€” and we are so grateful for ours. πŸ’™

As we count down to STEM YES! Summer Camp, we want to take a moment to shine a light on two incredible organizations who showed up for our students in a big way by donating swag for our campers.

Fortis College
Fortis doesn't just talk about access β€” they live it. As a college dedicated to training the next generation of healthcare professionals, they align perfectly with our first camp session: Science & Healthcare. Having them in our corner means the world to our students, many of whom are dreaming of careers in healthcare and medicine. A huge thank you to Dre Belton, Student Success Advisor, for connecting with us and making this happen. We see you, Dre! πŸ‘πŸΎ

βš™ GRW Engineering
GRW Engineering has been recognized as a top 500 company for several years running β€” and it shows in how they show up for their community. Their support of a nonprofit dedicated to connecting underrepresented and underserved youth to STEM opportunities speaks volumes about who they are. Thank you to Joseph Tierney, Senior Vice President, for meeting with us and believing in our mission.

And psssst... πŸ‘€ stay tuned, because we may have some exciting news about what's next with GRW and Fortis. Just saying. 🀫

This is what it looks like when organizations pour into the next generation. We are beyond thankful. πŸš€

Happy June! πŸŽ‰ And you know what that means...

⏳ 14 DAYS until STEM YES! Summer Camp kicks off!

This summer, young people in our community are going to walk into rooms they've never been in, meet professionals who look like them, and discover what they're truly capable of. And it all starts in TWO WEEKS. πŸš€

We've been working hard behind the scenes and we cannot wait to show you what we've been building. The countdown is ON.

Share this with someone who needs to see it. πŸ‘‡
