Laura Donnan (4 Jun 1854 – 22 Aug 1930) During her 45 years of teaching history, government, econ, Latin, and geometry at Shortridge High School, “She did more to make citizens, and to make them fundamentally American” by founding the High School Senate in 1887, where students debated on the real issues; this program was copied by school systems across the country. Donnan was also an ardent suffragist, coached girls’ basketball, and when a boy refused to sit next to a black girl in class, she kicked him out. She was also the first sponsor of Shortridge’s Daily newspaper, on which writers like Vonnegut and Wakefield would later work.
