Indiana Senior Medicare Patrol Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) is committed to helping Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries avoid, detect, prevent, and report health care fraud.

SMP not only protects older persons, they also help preserve the integrity of the Medicare and Medicaid programs. SMP staff and teams of highly trained volunteers conduct outreach to Medicare beneficiaries in their communities through group presentations, exhibiting at community events, answering calls to the SMP helplines, and one-on-one counseling. Like much of the SMP audience, most SMP volunteers are retirees and Medicare beneficiaries themselves and are well-positioned to assist their peers. The Indiana Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) project was supported, in part by grant number 90MPPG0035, from the U.S. Administration for Community Living, Department of Health and Human Services, Washington, D.C. 20201. Grantees undertaking projects under government sponsorship are encouraged to express freely their findings and conclusions. Points of view or opinions do not, therefore, necessarily represent official Administration for Community Living policy.

The scammers are impersonating the FTC! Learn the scam here so you don't fall for it!

Here’s the latest twist on FTC impersonators: someone claiming to be an FTC official (who’s really a scammer) calls to say a phone was registered under your name and number and is being used to commit scams in another country. The “FTC official” even reads off their badge ID (it’s a fake b...

Have you had a caller claim they are from Medicare saying you get a free brace if you've been on Medicare over 5 years? This is a scam! If you haven't had it yet, be on the lookout for it!

Medicare won't call you let alone offer free items. If you get a call like this, hang up. If you do give out your number, don't be embarrassed, please report it to the SMP. This will help track the scammers and also get you on the path to securing your medical identity.

If you need a back, knee, or wrist brace, work with your primary physician. Don't accept or order these braces through phone calls, TV ads, or mailings. These aren't "free”, and they may not fit or work for you.

The company that is providing the brace may send you multiple braces you don’t need and call you excessively; this can prevent you from receiving equipment you may need in the future.

If you have questions or need to report this happening to you, contact your local by using the state locator at www.smpresource.org or by calling the national toll-free number at 1-877-808-2468.
