Society of Architectural Historians, Central Indiana Chapter Over 40 years old, promotes the study of architectural history, education about our architectural heritage This award is still given periodically.

The Central Indiana Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians began in 1983 in Indianapolis with meetings over a table at the Old Spaghetti Factory, a pioneer restaurant in what is today the Wholesale District in downtown Indianapolis. Present were people from the state office of historic preservation, (then) Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana, Historic Indianapolis, Inc., architect

s, preservation activists. Later, members of the public history program at IUPUI were an active segment of the group. SAH originally met monthly at different locations; meetings nearly always included a program or tour of the venue. More social events included an annual Halloween classic film (with architectural elements, ideally!) and the annual Christmas party and architectural ornament auction. Frequent contributors to architectural education efforts such as the "Create-a-Landmark" competition for grade school children, in 1992 the group began an annual award named for early architectural historian Wilbur Peat to a person promoting the "Understanding and Appreciation of Indiana's Architectural Heritage." After 15 years or so, active membership began to dwindle, despite periodic and briefly successful attempts to revive it. It is a different world. We still officially exist and we fight the good fight. At present, we meet annually between Halloween and Christmas, combining what were once our two most popular events.

My latest for Living New Deal: WPA-built bandstands in Indiana.

The creation or improvement of town parks was one of the most typical and visible projects of the Works Progress Administration (WPA). They were popular assets for the community, providing needed employment with fewer expenditures: land usually was already available

This is happening all over the state (and the country). If the local people succeed in stopping one of these monsters, they just pop up somewhere else. Do these bring lots of jobs? NO! Or only temporarily at best. Will many of these buildings be standing empty in a frighteningly short time? YES! And then will the damage done be corrected? NO. And so it goes.

Amazon has opened a date center on 1,200 acres of land in Indiana dedicated to training and running models from Anthropic.

Some of the best arguments for historic preservation are not aesthetic or sentimental, but economic. Here are some examples of how the preservation and reuse of historic buildings can increase an area’s productivity.

It's not too late, but another threatened National Register-listed building:

Oh no. Not another one! I have written before about National Register buildings I have lovingly researched and gotten listed, only to see them threatened and even demolished years later. A listing will not save a historic structure, and we must remain vigilant!
