It was HCET’s first time at the Independent Sector conference and what a gem of learning, information sharing, and outstanding people! Abby reported that there were too many valuable people and sessions for one person❤️

There was special learning, connecting, and energizing that comes with a room full of many intermediary organizations like us that are focused on systems, workforce, training, and evaluation for large scale impact across important focus areas 🎉.

At HCET we continue to learn, grow, and test what works to make our organization and people happy, committed, and supported. What a gift to be with so many people doing the same-and also love that many of our own org values were reiterated here again and again (curiosity, belonging, innovation)

Also there were mountains so obviously for this one it meant an early am uber for a quick rocky cactus walk 😆 🌵

A kid asks you something that makes you freeze-maybe just on the inside, maybe outward too 😄 Your first instinct may be to change the subject.

Try this first: pause (sometimes a subtle deep breath helps). Then say, "Thanks for asking."

That one sentence tells them you are a safe person to bring questions to! You don't need the perfect answer yet. You can come back to it in five minutes or tomorrow. What matters is that they know they can ask again.

October is Let's Talk Month. All month we're sharing small skills that can make the big conversations easier.

"I don't know. Let's look it up together."

This is a favorite HCET parenting strategy and guess what-that's a complete answer. Really!

It shows your kid that not knowing is normal. It keeps the conversation going. And it teaches the skill you actually want them to have: how to find health information they can trust instead of whatever pops up first.

A tried and true good place for a hard conversation with teens? The car.

Nobody has to make eye contact. There’s something else to focus on. And there’s a natural end point when you get where you’re going.

Try it on the next drive to practice, school, or the grocery store. Start small.
“Have you heard anyone at school talking about ___?”

Then listen. You don’t have to have the perfect answer or turn it into the talk. Sometimes the most important thing is making sure they know they can talk to you.

October is Let's Talk Month. All month we're sharing small moves that make the big conversations easier. This month, find the small moments to start the conversation.
