We are presenting our new logo in honor of our 60th Anniversary!

Our updated design is inspired by a rose — the beautifully carved decorative pattern that covers the soundhole of a lute. The rose is inspired by gothic cathedral rose windows found as early as the 12th century. This particular design is known as the Gerle Rose; while this design originated before the Gerle lute, Georg Gerle’s version is the best example we have of this design. This rose can be found in multiple paintings from the 1500’s, and is clearly featured here in San Giobbe Altarpiece by Giovanni Bellini (Mongolo1984, CC BY-SA 3.0 , via Wikimedia Commons).

Robert Bolyard, board member and recent president of Indianapolis Early Music, digitally traced the rose from the painting, thoughtfully balancing the angular qualities of stained glass with the soft geometry of carved wood. The result is a design that honors history while remaining clear, elegant, and recognizable at any size.
