Meet Laura Ricks, a fiber artist from Lafayette, Indiana, and the maker behind Emerald Hill Textiles. Through wet felting and needle felting, she builds nature-inspired landscapes, creating texture and dimension with layers of wool, silk, and yarn.
After a career in medical technology, Laura was searching for a creative outlet. A chance encounter with felted ornaments in 2017 led her to wool, and she's been exploring the medium ever since.
Laura finds her subjects close to home, focusing on the quiet moments in Indiana's landscapes people often pass without noticing, like light through the trees or fireflies at dusk.
After being named a runner-up in 2024 and returning to Penrod this year, she says connecting with people over her work was an experience she won't forget.
