Big things are happening for Housing Navigation in reentry — and we’re excited to share what’s coming next‼️

Why this matters:

People returning from incarceration often face major barriers when trying to secure housing, and many traditional programs aren’t accessible to them. This initiative aims to change that by adapting proven housing navigation models specifically for individuals with justice involvement — with a strong focus on peer-led support, system navigation, and barrier reduction.

What’s launching: Step-Up, Inc. will engage Housing Navigators with lived experience to support participants through every step of the housing search, including:

🏠Identifying housing options
🤝Communicating with landlords
📝Completing applications
💡Problem-solving around barriers like criminal history, credit challenges, or lack of ID

Navigators will receive structured onboarding and training, building workforce capacity while ensuring participants get knowledgeable, compassionate support.

To make placements possible, barrier-buster funds will also be available to help address immediate obstacles that stand in the way of securing housing.

Once someone is housed, navigators will help connect them to ongoing services to support long-term stability.

This work is a major step toward improving housing outcomes for people in reentry — stay tuned to our social media for impact updates along the way.

This project was made possible by a grant from the Indianapolis Foundation.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and we’re highlighting the powerful work happening inside MCRC’s Health, Mental Health, & Substance Use Disorder (H/MH/SUD) Work Group.

💡Their vision:
Individuals impacted by the criminal justice system can access the health, mental health, and SUD support they need to thrive.

One of their current initiatives is developing a media campaign designed for spaces like the Adult Detention Center—ensuring people learn about reentry resources before they return to the community. Centering lived experience, reducing stigma, and building hope are at the core of this work.

Want to be part of efforts like this? Join the H/MH/SUD Work Group and collaborate with organizations like Step-Up and the Arc of Indiana, and others across Marion County.

🗓 Meets: First Wednesday of each month
⏰ Time: 1:30–2:30 PM

⭐ Meet JaMarcus ⭐ the next feature in our series uplifting the voices of people who have navigated reentry and now show up for others doing the same.

A member of the Marion County Reentry Coalition (MCRC) for 3.5 years, JaMarcus brings both lived experience and deep commitment to this work. As the leader of Iron Sharpens Iron (ISI), he transforms his own reentry journey into purpose — creating spaces where men feel seen, supported, and empowered. “Every challenge I faced became part of the blueprint for how I show up in this work today.”

His advice is powerful: For those doing the work — never lose sight of the humanity in the people you serve. Programs don’t change lives; relationships do. Listen more than you speak, meet people where they are, and let the community guide the solutions. For those reentering — your past may explain your story, but it does not define your future. Stay committed to your growth, build your circle, ask for help, and trust that there is purpose in your journey.

What JaMarcus values most about the MCRC is the alignment: a community where lived experience, professional insight, and real collaboration come together to build systems that truly support change.

We’re honored to highlight his leadership and impact at the MCRC!

⭐ Meet Mutia ⭐ our next feature in this series highlighting leaders who have navigated reentry and now pour their energy back into the community.

For the past three years, Mutia has been an active member of the Marion County Reentry Coalition (MCRC). He is the Executive Director and Founder of the Mumineen Community Development Corporation, where his life experiences and professional mission intersect in powerful ways.

Mutia values the MCRC for its flexibility — the ability to choose its battles with intention and focus. He believes this matters because authentic voices in reentry work are rare, and the coalition’s role in elevating them is essential.

His advice for anyone doing this work, or reentering themselves, is simple and profound: It is worthy of your life to dedicate it to the service of others.

What excites him most right now is the coalition’s consistency — a steady, collective commitment to showing up for the community.

We’re grateful to highlight Mutia’s leadership and the authenticity he brings to this work!

⭐Meet Ladessa ⭐ the first feature in our series uplifting the voices of people who have navigated reentry and now show up for others doing the same.

For the past three years, Ladessa has been a powerful part of the Marion County Reentry Coalition (MCRC) community. She currently serves as the Marketing & Account Manager at Showtime Roofing — but her impact goes far beyond her title.

For Ladessa, being a part of the MCRC is about belonging, purpose, and being seen for who you’re becoming, not what you’ve been through. She believes deeply in advocating for the rights of people impacted by the justice system and shifting the narrative toward dignity and possibility.

Why does this work matter? Because too many people return home without the support they need to truly succeed. As Ladessa says, second chances require more than opportunity — they require community, advocacy, and access.

What excites her most is the growing momentum: more collaboration, more lived experience at the center, and more intentional pathways for long-term success.

We’re honored to highlight her story and grateful for the leadership she brings to our community!
