Within two weeks of deploying to Iraq in 2007, Dr. Josh McConkey’s life changed. Eight helicopters were shot down and a fellow flight surgeon was killed.
This week, the combat flight surgeon, Air Force Reserve colonel and emergency physician joins Tango Alpha Lima to talk about adapting under fire, the difficult transition to the civilian ER, and why he wrote the leadership book “Be the Weight Behind the Spear.”
McConkey explains why those at the tip of the spear never succeed alone, and why families, mentors, coaches and communities matter. He also shares his message on mental health: you don’t have to carry it by yourself.
Also in this episode, co-hosts Stacy Pearsall, Adam Marr and Joe Worley discuss a July 2026 GAO report on quality care and the restructuring of Air Force medicine to focus on operational missions.

Two resolutions impacting the Sons of The American Legion were passed by The American Legion National Executive Committee at last week's Fall Meetings in Indianapolis:
* Ahead of the SAL centennial coming up in 2032, the 100th Anniversary Committee is officially established.
* The PNC JR Stillwell National Legacy Award has been officially established.
More details to come on the 100th Anniversary Committee's goals, including a centennial website designed to allow squadrons to share their history, and how to submit nominations for the Stillwell Award.

In the first week of October, The American Legion’s online memorial database stood at 3,890 entries from around the world of military monuments and memorials stretching back even before the Revolutionary War. It debuted in November 2016 as part of both the Legion’s centennial celebration and its defense of such structures in the face of efforts to remove some with religious symbolism from the public arena.
To celebrate the beginning of fall, The American Legion is beginning a push to grow the database to 4,000 by Memorial Day 2027 – May 31. An online form makes it easy to gather and submit information on monuments and memorials as well as upload photos, even from a mobile device. The database is searchable by state or keyword; see what has already been listed in your area, then get started on filling in the gaps.

Air Force veteran Dan Roby spent decades leading airmen and retired as a Chief Master Sergeant. It took him 12 schools and 27 years to finish his bachelor’s degree. Today, as Vice President of Military Affairs at American Military University, he’s making sure service members don’t face the same obstacles.
