Martin Luther King Community Center

Martin Luther King Community Center Neighborhood Center: Our mission is to educate youth, empower families, and build Beloved Community.

Our Vision
is the Beloved Community where all neighbors thrive. Our Mission is to engage neighbors to practice radical love and build Dr. King's vision of the Beloved Community

Our Values are rooted in Dr. King's principles of nonviolence:

• Leadership and Impact - Nonviolence is a way of life for courageous people. It is aggressive spiritually, mentally, and emotionally.

• Relationships and

Belonging - Nonviolence seeks friendship and understanding with the end goal of redemption and reconciliation to build the Beloved Community in this place.

• Equality and Equity - Nonviolence seeks to defeat injustice and not people by considering the perspectives of all people and seeking to right wrongs.

• Resilience and Innovation - Nonviolence believes that unearned, voluntary suffering for a just cause is redemptive. From our hardships we can engage and educate everyone without retaliating.

• Integrity and Community - Nonviolence chooses love instead of hate and resists internal violence of the spirit as well as physical violence of the body. Nonviolence avoids bitterness and hate through spontaneous, unmotivated, unselfish, and creative love.

• Justice and Opportunity - Nonviolence knows that the universe is on the side of justice. Hope prevails that every human being, even our opponents, can change.

We had a great time representing the Center at the Eiteljorg Museum's First Friday Community Block Party! 🎉

It was an evening full of music, community, conversation, and connection as we shared more about our mission, the neighborhoods we serve, and the work happening through our programs. We also loved reconnecting with community partners and meeting new faces along the way.

Thank you to the Eiteljorg Museum for hosting such a welcoming event and creating space for organizations across Indianapolis to come together in support of our communities. We’re already looking forward to the next one! ☀️

This week, nearly 100 families gathered at the MLK Center for our summer programs walk-through — and the energy was everything. 💛

Some came for the very first time. Others have been with us for years, returning to trust us with their kids again. Either way, the message was the same: we're in this together.

On June 8, summer kicks off and runs through July 31 — eight weeks of fun, structure, and growth across all four of our neighborhoods. Our Elementary Camp is leaning into the theme Standing on Business, while our *Middle School Camp *embraces Nature 🌿. Our Teen Summer Youth Employment Program runs alongside it. Breakfast and lunch are covered daily, so families have one less thing to worry about. 🍎

Thanks to our partnership with Butler University camps and community programs, our youth get to: 🎨 Explore visual art, storytelling, and performance at Amazing Artists 🎮 Sharpen strategy and teamwork at the Esports Camp ✍️ Find their voice at the Butler Creative Writing Camp 🎓 And our teens will earn real-world workplace skills and college credits.

Huge thanks to our staff, volunteers, and partner families who turned a walk-through into a welcome — and to Butler for opening their doors so our neighbors can find the tools and resources they need to thrive.

This is what building the Beloved Community looks like. 🙌

Celebrating LEVEL UP 🎉✨📚

At the MLK Center, we believe every young person deserves the care, attention, and encouragement they need to succeed. That belief is what brought LEVEL UP to life this semester — a tutoring program built to help our elementary students strengthen their academic skills while growing in confidence along the way.

Throughout the semester, students were paired with dedicated volunteer tutors — their "Brain Buddies" — who walked alongside them with one-on-one support in homework, reading, and other subjects. Those sessions became more than study time. They became space for our students to ask questions, try new things, and experience the joy that comes from finally getting it. 🌟

But LEVEL UP was always about more than academics. It was about helping our students believe in themselves. And with the steady presence of caring mentors and a positive learning environment, they did exactly that — discovering that they are capable, curious, and ready to grow. 🧠

We're deeply grateful for every volunteer who stepped forward to pour into our youth, every parent who trusted us with their child, and every student who showed up ready to learn. Together, we helped our young people rise, learn, and thrive — and we can't wait to do it again next semester. 🤞🏽

On Thursday, our building was full of energy. 🌟

The folks from College Mentors For Kids - Butler University came out for a community service project — and wow, they did not disappoint. It was great to meet the people who are working so closely alongside our elementary students and the staff who serve them.

A little about them: College Mentors is not a Butler University program — they're a charter organization with chapters at universities like Butler and Ball State, partnering with local schools and organizations to bring meaningful mentorship to young people. Isn't that cool?

And on Thursday, they showed up and worked hard. They tackled the garden out back, the storage spaces, the lounge, and even organized and wiped down the shelves in our Dr. King Library — leaving every single space better than they found it. 🌱📚

What made it even more special? They were genuinely thrilled and touched by the tour — learning the history and heart behind this place. You could feel it land.

That's what the Beloved Community is all about — people showing up, connecting, and leaving changed.

Thank you, College Mentors. You are always welcome here. 💙
