Last night the US Senate passed four more years of funding for the Great Lakes via unanimous consent!

The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative passed out of the Senate, moving one step closer to providing ongoing funding for the Great Lakes! This legislation authorizes $475 million annually for the next four years to restore habitat, conserve wetlands, fight invasive species and improve water quality.

Indiana Senator Todd Young is a co-sponsor of this vital legislation, and we are thankful to both him and Senator Jim Banks for their ongoing support of the GLRI!

This is GREAT NEWS! Invasive carp are both biological and economic disasters. Keeping them out of Lake Michigan is vital and we applaud the resumed work on Brandon Road.

Brandon Road is so back 🎉 (Sorry not sorry, invasive carp!)

After a temporary stop work order on the Brandon Road Interbasin Project, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has announced that construction on this crucial barrier will resume 👏

Keeping out invasive carp is pivotal in protecting our economy and environment, and Brandon Road is the single best way to do that. Invasive carp pose a serious threat to the Great Lakes, the source of drinking water for more than 30 million people, and the linchpin of a multi-billion dollar fishing and recreational boating industry.

Thank you to everyone who spoke out in support of continuing this project — your voices were heard!

As Indiana continues to grapple with the ongoing fallout from the recent disasters throughout our state, it is time to seriously talk about utilizing natural infrastructure as a defense against flooding and other weather-related disasters.

For centuries, humans have decimated the landscape, draining wetlands and replacing native plants with ornamentals; we have greatly diminished our state's ability to handle severe weather. Native plants utilize their vast root structure to hold water and soil in place, while simultaneously providing habitat for wildlife. Wetlands hold water and replenish our aquifers while keeping runoff from blowing out streams and rivers.

Underserved communities have long suffered from disinvestment and lack of infrastructure investment, making them even more vulnerable to our increasingly severe weather patterns. It is time we embrace the cost-effective solutions provided through natural infrastructure and preserving those natural buffers we still have. Federal programs like the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative provide valuable funding to build environmental resilience in our state. It is time for Indiana and our elected officials to embrace natural infrastructure to benefit Hoosier humans and wildlife.
