INDOT is closing 71st Street and the 71st Street Trail under 465 on the northeast side of Indianapolis. The trail will be closed for 2 months for construction on the Interstate above the trail. INDOT suggests 75th Street as a Detour. Indiana Department of Transportation, do you have a safe detour for trail users?

Clear Path crews are completing final improvements on 71st Street under I-465 and the bridges overhead. During the Pandemic, many people took up cycling and found they enjoyed it, continuing to ride today. Unfortunately, traffic has returned to pre-pandemic levels, yet with little dedicated cycling infrastructure, the conflict between drivers and cyclists has become tragic nationwide.

Indianapolis is working to improve the trail and protected bike lane infrastructure to protect those who choose alternative forms of transportation, such as the Bus Rapid Transit lines, modifications to New York and Michigan Streets, and much more. However, with every tragic bike crash, we are reminded that there is a lot more that needs to be done.

A rash of crashes shows a dangerous rivalry won't let up. Why are drivers and bicyclists seemingly always at odds?

Indiana Trails sent two of our employees to advocate to our Indiana Representatives and Senators about bicycle-friendly legislation. While there are portions of this legislation with which we are disappointed, we feel that by sharing our voice and concerns, we may have helped avoid some truly atrocious legislation. Thank you to the League of American Bicyclists for organizing the sessions in DC this year!

🌟 Volunteer Spotlight!

Susan Fitzpatrick adopted a segment of the Nickel Plate Trail down in Miami County and has been doing a beautiful job keeping it clean. But she didn't stop there — she enlisted five young people to join her, and together they've been picking up trash, pulling weeds, and making the trail shine.

What we love most? These young volunteers are getting a firsthand lesson in what it means to give back to their community. That's the Nickel Plate Trail spirit right there. 💚
