Teachers see inconsistency and often assume lack of effort. Parents see tears, exhaustion, and a child working twice as hard for half the result.

Sometimes what looks like inattention is actually dyslexia. Sometimes what looks like laziness is frustration.

Know the difference. It changes lives.

Talking openly about dyslexia is also a great way to reducing shame.

Child Find is a verb.
It means schools go looking for disabilities like dyslexia, not waiting for failure to pile high enough to be undeniable.

Early identification isn’t a favor. It’s a civil right under IDEA.
Every year we wait is a year a child practices believing the wrong story about themselves.

Let’s be the adults who notice early and act sooner!

Schools can identify, evaluate, DIAGNOSE and remediate dyslexia with the new Tests of Dyslexia from WPS - Western Psychological Services.

If they won’t use the words “ diagnose dyslexia”, they can instead say “ we can evaluate for all areas of suspected disabilities via Child Find laws for educational purposes” instead. Children deserve full access to all areas of school life, academically and socially.

Updated resources :

Did you know the new Tests of Dyslexia now helps any school identify, evaluate, diagnose and remediate dyslexia?

This new test was designed to be used by a wide variety of skilled staff at the school.

1. Schools no longer have to say “ we can’t diagnose dyslexia “ once they get up-to-date with best practices.

See this helpful document from the New York Association of School Psychologists:

Did you know WPS - Western Psychological Services has been helping schools understand how kids learn for over 75 years?

It’s best to hire a skilled advocate and take a workshop from Wrightslaw.org.

4. Information about the new Tests of Dyslexia was available in 2024 at all the national professional conferences for educators, special educators, psychologists, neuropsychologists, early child care, SLPs, counselors and administrators that are held each year.

Hopefully every educator at your school attends conferences, reads professional journals, networks with professional groups and stays informed about current education news.

Every person working with children must do their own lifelong learning beyond college and work training.

6. Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that impacts a student's ability to learn to read. Teams of educators including school psychologists, reading specialists, speech and language pathologists, and special educators can determine if students meet the criteria for dyslexia during eligibility testing and/or re-evaluations.

In some USA states, dyslexia falls under the category of a Specific Learning Disability.

Both Federal and State guidance endorse the use of the term dyslexia during evaluation, eligibility determinations, and IEP documents when students meet the criteria as outlined in the most widely accepted definition of dyslexia.

19. NY state now requires insurance to cover dyslexia assessments. Each USA state is different.

20. Many people prefer to get a private evaluation as they feel an independent evaluator is more likely to provide better testing in all areas of suspected disabilities.

21. In the USA, parents must put their request for an evaluation in writing. Just asking verbally is not enough even if you trust the school.

The laws require a written request which must include asking “ to be tested in all areas of suspected disabilities “ in the letter.

You can get help writing this letter from an advocate. See Wrightslaw, Decoding Dyslexia-IA, Federation for Children with Special Needs.

"Both federal and state law allows NYS certified school psychologists to diagnose dyslexia. NYS Education Law Article 153 allows school psychologists to diagnose for the purposes of educational planning, such as CSE classification and Section 504 services and accommodations. Additionally, at the federal level, the law and guidance memos from the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS) allows and encourages NYS school psychologists to identify dyslexia, share it with stakeholders (teachers, parents), write it in IEPs and other eligibility documents."

If you happen to see this tonight, you have a few hours left to watch this for free. So well done, they were able to really show the struggle, the importance of diagnosis and using the word “Dyslexia.” They demonstrated proper literacy instruction and its value. And the power of moms who refuse to take “no” for an answer. Hopefully other school systems can follow the lead and start public literacy schools for the kids who need them!
