n. September 26, 1872, he brought 13 brothers together to form the Ancient Accepted Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. Many saw the Shrine as the playground of Masonry. They formed Mecca Temple and started a movement that would later become the greatest philanthropy in the world though that wasn't the plan at the time. Today, there are 200 Shrine Centers around the world in 8 countries and 750,000 Shriners worldwide. Shriners International supports 22 Childrens Hospitals in the United States, Canada and Mexico, that provides world class treatment for children with orthopedic, spina bifida, cleft palate, neurological and burn needs at no cost to the families and transportation is provided to and from appointments. Murat Shrine was formed in March of 1884. today, Murat has over 5,500 members. The Indianapolis icon, the Murat Shrine Temple, was completed in 1910. In 1968, the "Shrine Club" was added to the building adding facilities such as the Arabian Room, the Tunisian Room and the Red Fez Room (now the Corinthian Room). In 1993, the declining condition of the old building and costs of maintenance forced the nobility to make the hard choice of leasing the old building, along with the theatre and the Egyptian Room, to the City of Indianapolis and Sunshine Promotions (now Live Nation) who made substantial renovations and restorations to the old building so that it remains an Indianapolis icon and premier entertainment venue. Murat Shriners today are a fun loving group of men committed to fun, fraternity and philanthropy. Murat has many units that revolve around members interests such as singing, band, parades, travel, photography, model railroading and many others. There are also county clubs around the state which are closer for more involvement of the members. It has fun activities throughout the year for its members and also activities for wives, significant others and family.
