Ms. Aster in her natural element.

Seeds in her hands, students by her side, and lessons growing in every direction. The garden is more than a place to plant and harvest. It's where young people learn patience, responsibility, and the value of nurturing something over time.

Some of the best teaching happens with dirt on your hands. 💚

🎶 Pickle, pickle, pick your pickle! 🥒
After learning the art and science of pickling, students put their Inquiry & Ingenuity skills into action by creating and sharing their own pickled vegetables. The intro to the showcase was an earworm we can't get out of our heads.

Unexpected wildlife update from FHC!

We recently discovered a large groundhog living under one of our sheds. Its tunnels had become so extensive that shelves were sinking and what looked like solid ground turned out to be hidden holes.

Today, we safely captured the groundhog and relocated it to a wooded area, where it was happily released.

Just another day of caring for our surroundings and community, even our furry friends!

At FHC, leadership starts with understanding the world through different perspectives.

As part of the Youth Engagement component of the Martindale-Brightwood Quality of Life Plan (MBQLP), students participated in a Privilege Walk, a guided leadership activity that explored how personal experiences, opportunities, and social challenges can shape each person's journey differently.

Through thoughtful reflection and discussion, youth gained a deeper understanding of empathy, equity, and the importance of listening to experiences beyond their own. These conversations help build stronger leaders who are prepared to create positive change in their communities.

A great summer program starts with great preparation.

Chef Tracy trained our FHC lunch servers on proper food handling and safety practices as they get ready to serve their peers this summer. These hands-on lessons help our students build professionalism, responsibility, and workplace skills they can carry into future jobs and careers.

We’re grateful to Circle City Prep for partnering with us to provide breakfast and lunch for our Summer Employment Program participants. Thank you for helping ensure our students are fueled and ready to learn, work, and grow all summer long.

The first day of our Summer Employment Program.

Today, students participated in a Train-the-Trainer workshop led by Family Links as they prepare to help launch a Teen Support Group for KIPP high school youth.

We're excited to partner with organizations that invest in young people and give our students opportunities to develop real-world leadership, facilitation, and communication skills throughout the summer.

Thank you to Family Links for helping us kick off the season.

For the past 5 summers, Major Tool & Machine has helped us get ready for the season by putting up our tent at Felege Hiywot Center.

Their engineers have been more than volunteers. They’ve been steady partners, mentors, and a true anchor for our students and community year after year.

We’re grateful for the consistency, care, and commitment MTM continues to bring to FHC every summer.

For KennisAnn, the Future Innovators Pitch Competition was not just about presenting an idea. It was about learning how to work with others, understand different perspectives, and use her skills to help the community.

In this testimonial, she reflects on how students turned teamwork, leadership, and creativity into projects designed to make a real impact.

At FHC, students are building skills for the future while learning how to show up for the people around them. 🎥

At the Polk Porch Party last week, our Student Leaders represented FHC’s Youth Engagement team by connecting directly with neighbors, sharing ideas, and listening to what young people believe our community needs most. 🌱

Tahir and Dalles helped lead conversations around our youth survey board while handing out marigold and vegetable seeds to peers and families who stopped by the table.

This experience reflected the “S” in RISE: Social Impact. Our students practiced effective communication by explaining the purpose behind the survey board, collaboration by working together throughout the event, and connection by engaging with community members from different backgrounds and perspectives.

The Polk Porch Party is always a reminder that some of the most important community conversations start with young people feeling empowered to speak up and be heard.
