Meet the artist!

The artist's work reflects on multiplicity and originality in contemporary art, and aims for immersive experience in all his projects. Having graduated from the Royal College of Art, London, in 1993, the German-born artist is one of the resident artists at Wapahani Arts Center.

Kiekeben's works take form as immersive digital wall drawings, paintings, metal friezes, and sequences of original prints. Projects often play on a minimalist cut and paste aesthetic and include many tailor-made and site-specific installations –– such as ‘Cascade’, ‘Quantum Ice’, or ‘Loop’ –– and have been exhibited internationally in private and public galleries and museums since the late 1980s. Friedhard Kiekeben was an Associate Professor of Fine Art at Columbia College Chicago for 20 years, and the artist now moved to Indianapolis for new projects.

Currently the artist is working on new ‘Overpaintings’ (taking inspiration from the White River), and a large solo show of walldrawings at Evanston Arts Center in the Spring of 2026.

Friedhard Kiekeben is also recognized as an innovator and publisher in the field of safer printmaking and painting and will offer specialist courses at Wapahani Arts Center from December 2025. Details can be found here:

Another day closer to the studio open house THIS FRIDAY! Meet Avon Waters!

Avon's art dances on the knife’s edge between representationalism and abstraction. Allowing the painting to lead him—it decides which side of the knife’s blade it falls. The surface, layering, and the physical processes he uses vary from painting to painting and he is always experimenting with tools, materials, and techniques.

Avon's interest in conservation pushes him toward making landscapes that he wants to escape into, but do not exist. Inspired by observations and plein air studies, he aspires for these made-up spaces to possess a fragility that humans wish to enter but fear might break or destroy what is there.

Day 2 of meet the artists, in countdown to our studio open house this FRIDAY! Meet .art!

Kassie Woodworth's work draws from personal growth, healing, and the dynamic relationship between her inner world and external environment. Kassie explores these themes through drawing, paper sculpture, ceramics, found objects, and textiles, allowing each material to guide my process. Practices such as meditation, yoga, and hiking in the forest feed her studio work.
