The B***r Fitness & Learning Center grew out of a community-driven quality of life work plan begun in 2007. This process engaged more than 500 residents in defining seven quality of life indicators, each of which consists of multiple action items with performance measures attached. This work plan, and its promise of revitalization for an entire neighborhood, was attached to the city of Indianapoli
s’ bid for the 2012 Super Bowl and helped secure it. When Indianapolis was awarded the 2012 Super Bowl, the National Football League donated a $1 million capital gift towards the establishment of a Youth Education Town (the 14th in the nation). Each YET is provided with national programming models based upon research-based practices and are provided with technical assistance; however, each is unique in its operations, partners and programming based upon the distinctive nature and vision of each sponsoring organization.
