ProAct Indy

ProAct Indy We exist to stand in the gap with youth to realize a vision to turn the world outward. This begs the question: Why do we continue to silo ourselves?

In many efforts to alleviate societal issues and address the issue of poverty, many schools, businesses, and nonprofits often engage in work that oftentimes overlap without intentional collaboration that creates shared-value. The unintended consequence of
creating silos is that wider gaps are created in the lives of vulnerable populations. Who is standing in the gaps to leverage social capital for

effective community engagement among schools, businesses, and nonprofits to create a supportive ecosystem for vulnerable youth and populations? Founded in 2010, ProAct Indy brings together organizations in the city - helping groups cross social, racial, and economic boundaries - through meaningful, human-centered service projects and social equity training. Providing innovative and unique programs and services to our community, we intentionally connect schools, businesses, and nonprofits to empower our youth and better serve our community. Our diverse and experienced team is driven by the desire to change how youth and communities experience one another as we have engaged over 25,000 Indianapolis residents in human-centered social action through our innovative program model called a "ProAct Community" which addresses poverty and prevents or reduces societal issues and racism by breaking down silos among the education, nonprofit, and business sectors through intentional community engagement. Our work helps sustain and amplify youth voice and action as our youth partner with a professional mentor who provides support, while nonprofits offer service opportunities and
volunteer training. How does this work?

1. We partner with schools to connect vulnerable youth to our network of corporate mentors and local nonprofits. Through innovative curriculum and critical service-learning, ProAct empowers youth to actively transform their communities.
2. We provide businesses with volunteer, learning, and professional development opportunities that deepen their employees' understanding of vulnerable populations.
3. We partner with nonprofit organizations to provide customized support and engaged volunteers to better serve their mission.

We all have somewhere we want to end up in life, but often, the path isn’t easy. The difference between those who make it and those who don’t are the people who pick themselves back up time and time again.

A company builder, best-selling author, and business + executive coach, Scott Abbott shares the story of how he “got his s**t together” after moving across the country to Los Angeles.

Scott paints a picture of how he took control of his life and climbed up from rock bottom. He details how he went from the lowest point in his life to building companies through perseverance and a little bit of luck.

Throughout this episode, you’ll learn how the phrase “Get your s**t together” shifted Scott’s perspective on life. You’ll also learn how to make changes in your everyday life by taking the initiative in making your goals a reality and how to swallow your pride and accept help in the face of adversity.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

The ABC pillars of success: architect, builder, and custodian
How to pick yourself up from rock bottom
The true power of a “thank you”

Last Saturday, students from Willow Lake and Westlane worked with SoapBox Racing at their track!

Students got the opportunity to learn how to race in the soap box cars, while also working to help SoapBox leaders clean up the areas surrounding the track and pavilion area in preparing for weather circumstances, as well as their Halloween event on October 28th.

Our ProAct students will be back at the track to help out and participate in SoapBox's Halloween event!

October 10th is World Mental Health Day.

World Mental Health Day is an international day used to raise awareness, advocate, and educate about the social stigma. It is important to advance your understanding and encourage action during this day, to help those around you understand what they can do protect one's mental health.

Here are some things you can do:
- Educate yourself and others on Mental Illness warning signs and symptoms
- Practice Kindness and Compassion
- Taking time for your wellbeing
- Text a friend/Call a loved one
- Practice meditation

Another thing you can do, that we at ProAct Indy implement monthly, is taking a mental health day! It is imperative that you take time for yourself, and use that time for whatever you may be needing at that time.

If you or a loved one need help in a mental health crisis or distress, call or text 988 to talk with a trained crisis counselor.

What an incredible day it was last week when the spirit of community, leadership, and service converged at the Leadership Connection Day of Service! 🫱🏾‍🫲🏽💪🏽

This event, brought to you by the Carmel Rotary , was nothing short of extraordinary. It united community partners ( Shepherd Community Center , Food 4 Souls , Mission To Connect , and Hamilton County Youth Assistance Program), local business leaders, and nearly 100 passionate students from Christel House International and Carmel High School. 👐🏾📚

Together, we embarked on a journey to discover the true essence of leadership and service above self. 💡🌏 Our hearts swelled with pride as we witnessed the youth of our community wholeheartedly embrace this commitment. 🌟

The energy was infectious, and the enthusiasm was palpable as these young leaders explored the transformative power of service. 🚀💖 From learning sessions to hands-on projects, their thirst for knowledge and their desire to make a difference were awe-inspiring. 🤗💬

We firmly believe that these seeds of leadership and service sown today will flourish into a brighter, more compassionate future. 🌱🌞

Thank you to all who made this day possible, and to the youth who remind us that the future is in the hands of those who dare to lead with their hearts. 💞🌠

Let's continue to inspire, empower, and serve our community, together! 🌏💫

We have successfully launched our youth programs for this year, and today, while at Victory College Prep, one of our teammates facilitated our 'Start the Right Way' exercise with 5th Graders, our first time doing so with that young of an age group after standardizing our curriculum this year.

And wow! These kids get it! An incredible discussion followed that created a space for vulnerability, mindfulness, and connection among our students that had our team walking away inspired by our young leaders.

Start the Right Way is one of the Outward Mindset tools from our friends at The Arbinger Institute which is very helpful whenever you, individually or as part of a team, are faced with a situation where it would be easy to become inward—when you are about to write
an email about a thorny situation, for example, or when you are about to start a potentially contentious meeting, or when you are about to begin a challenging project. Or maybe you are about to place a phone call to someone you find difficult.

If you remember to do the following before you begin doing any of these or other potentially challenging things, you will find that they will go better.

Our Story

Founded in 2010 by Derrin Slack, after he had a life-changing experience in Botswana, Africa, our mission is to engage youth in public service that educates, delights, and inspires the youth and those they serve.

Since 2010, ProAct has been helping urban youth build solid foundations based on relationships and service to help address poverty and education. We had an innovative idea: empower youth. Give them the tools and mentorship to give their service to the community. In doing so, students gain confidence and build their abilities. But an idea is only as good as its ex*****on. Corporate citizens and community leaders are the heartbeat of ProAct. These are the civil-minded individuals who create opportunities for our youth to prosper. They are the mentors who encourage ProAct’s students to shine. They are today’s leaders giving guidance to tomorrow’s future.

All of ProAct’s service-learning programs are conducted in a social justice context to help participants gain skills to be more empathetic and tolerant of others by building transformational relationships. We conduct over 200 service projects each year and each project is unique, covering a different socioeconomic issue or solution in a different neighborhood. Students benefit from being immersed in diverse communities and challenged with new problems.

It’s not a one-sided deal though, the communities benefit from our students’ efforts and service with evident changes from ongoing community projects.
