42nd Royal Highland Regiment We are living history reenactors: those that recreate history to teach the general public about history and the events we portray. Thames, in July of 1776.

We represent the Grenadier Company of the 42nd Foot, The Royal Highland Regiment. We represent the Grenadier Company of the 42nd Foot, The Royal Highland Regiment, as they would have appeared in winter camp, New York, in October of 1776. Our camp impression is that of the Regiment December 17th through January 19th of 1776-1777 while in winter garrison around Providence, Rhode Island. Our issue un

iform has not been modified, but shows the rigors of both a long sea voyage and of participation in the New York area campaigns. The original Grenadier Company, under the command of Captain/Lt. John Peebles, arrived in New York Harbor aboard the transport H.M.S. Upon landing, the Company was brigaded with the Grenadier of the 71st Highland Regiment to form the 4th Grenadier Battalion. Both companies were double strength, which is to say that each had (on paper) 100 men as opposed to the usual 50. At the time of our impression, pay vouchers indicated that the Grenadier Company had a real strength of 86 enlisted men, musicians included. Due to the poor condition of the men of the 71st, the 4th Grenadier Battalion was disbanded and the 42nd Grenadiers attached to the 3rd Battalion. At the termination of action in the New York area, the company was returned to the Regiment, but was shortly put on outpost duty at Bordentown. This was our station at the time of our impression.

Join us this weekend May 24 and 25 2025 for the Spirit of Vincennes Rendezvous. George Rogers Clark will be hosting living historians onsite in a grand encampment.

Free Events on Clark Memorial Grounds:
Colors Ceremonies in front of the Clark Memorial:
Saturday 10:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.
Sunday at 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

SAR Ceremony: Saturday 11:00 a.m.

Tours of the Grand Encampment, meet at the cannon in front of the Visitor Center:
Saturday 12:00 p.m.
Sunday 2:00 p.m.

Ranger Talk, meet at the cannon in front of the Visitor Center:
Saturday 11:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

We get a lot of people asking "How do we get started in reenacting?" Or "This looks so fun, I would love to try!"

FALL REENACTING EVENTS ARE RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER—JOIN US!

Interested in reenacting, but not sure if it’s right for you? Be our guest! The NWTA welcomes non-members to guest with us at up to two events before deciding to join. You will be matched with a unit or group that fits your interests for the weekend.
To get started working with our Recruiters, contact us via the Request to Guest form at nwta.com/join-form/.

Your hosts will provide 18th century clothing for you to borrow and a tent to stay in, as well as any necessary equipment (including reproduction weapons for those portraying soldiers). Every unit handles meals a little differently—you will communicate about this and other logistics with your host unit.

Then, get to the event site and get to know us!

If you find that this hobby isn’t for you, no problem. You are under no obligation to the host unit or the NWTA. If you want to continue reenacting, however, you are welcome to work with the Recruiters to join the NWTA! You will eventually need to select a unit to join; however, you don’t need to do so right away.

You are also welcome to contact units individually and ask about guesting with them. Many of our guests and new members come to us as friends of current members—and that’s great! Units may vary in what they are able to offer guests in terms of loaner gear.

Each of the NWTA units is an organization unto itself. Though it’s often an interest in a particular kind of unit that draws new members (like an interest in artillery, or British regulars, or Native Americans), it is also important to check out the “personality” of each unit. Some are very family-oriented with whole families reenacting together and lots of kids in camp, while others may have a membership of younger or older participants that do not have children. Some units have an even mix of men and women, while others are predominantly men. The Recruiters can help you match your needs and interests with units that fit them; you can then communicate with those units’ commanders.

As the day closes on what was a fantastic start to our season, the 42nd are relaxing listening to our children play, and reflecting on what ended up being a huge Vincennes for us.

A new set of colors, hand painted, and hand sewn by a few of our talented members have been dedicated and debuted, multi year memberships recognized, and new members being brought on board.

Once again we thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for coming out to see us at the 44th annual Spirit of Vincennes Rendezvous.

We hope you will come out and see us at the Celtic Fest Ohio the 18th of June! Located at the Ohio Renaissance Festival grounds in Harveysburg, Ohio!!

Please join the this upcoming Memorial Day weekend in Vincennes, Indiana on the lovely banks of the Wabash river for the 44th Annual Spirit of Vincennes Rendezvous.

DID YOU MISS US!?

We hope everyone has woken up from their winter hibernation! We hosted our unit muster last month, decided on the events for the season, and dusted off some muskets and drill in preparation for the upcoming season.

Keep your eyes peeled, in the next few days we will be posting our 2022 schedule, as well as some information about our first event of the season!
