This group of wonderful volunteers from Managed Health Services - MHS recently set up an apartment for a mom and her two boys moving into Coburn Place after they escaped domestic violence. Because of our volunteers and supporters, this family will be able to rest, heal, and rebuild in their own safe home.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The statistics are stark. The stories are real. The stakes are life and death.

Homicide is the number one cause of death for pregnant women, and last year, 1 in 4 homicides in Indiana were because of domestic violence.

These aren't abstract problems. They're real women – most with young children – whose lives hang in the balance as they risk homelessness or death.

At Coburn Place, women escaping domestic violence and their children can move into fully furnished apartments filled with food, basic necessities, art, and love for up to two years rent- and utility-free.

It's more likely for young children who experience domestic violence to have trouble in school, and a little extra help can make all the difference. Thankfully, the kids living at Coburn Place get one-on-one academic support with tutors from Brightlane Learning.

We are so grateful for our tutors and community for guiding and supporting our youngest survivors on their path forward.

Young people have voices, experiences, strengths, and needs that deserve to be heard. It's up to us to make sure that happens.

Please join us on Sept. 30, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church for the State of the Youth, a community gathering dedicated to discussing and learning ways to uplift and empower young people in Indianapolis.

You’ll hear from Tracy Clark and Elizabeth Weir, who support survivors of domestic violence as they rebuild their lives at Coburn Place in Indianapolis. Through their work, they help survivors and their families find stability, rest, grow and heal from trauma.

Everyone deserves a safe home – including pets.

When survivors of domestic violence move into their new, safe home at Coburn Place, so do their furry friends.

Unfortunately, pets can be used as tools of control in abusive relationships, and concern for a beloved pet’s safety can make leaving an abusive situation even more difficult. Increasing the risk of harm for everyone.
